Shy, confident, No. 1 and a major pageant change are elements that could all work together to help make Miss Kansas the next Miss America.

"Kansas, I'm going out to do you proud. I'm going to bring that crown home," said Miss Kansas Michelle Walthers as she prepares to head to the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas. "I feel very honored to represent our state, our pageant and all the girls in our pageant system."

A change in the Miss America platform could work in Walthers favor. Starting this year and every following year, the Children's Miracle Network will be the official platform of the Miss America Pageant and whoever wins the title will take on that platform, Walthers said.

Walthers platform is family relationships and she believes it will be flexible and fit in with the new platform.

"The Children Miracle Network will marry nicely with my platform. Now I just have to convince the judges of that," Walthers said.

Every year, the Miss America organization would have to put together an event list the would fit the platform of the new Miss America.

By always having the Children's Miracle Network as Miss America's platform, it will make it much easier to have appearances already in place.
