By PEGGY SENZARINO, Of The Globe Gazette

CLEAR LAKE — Emily Nicholas — Miss Iowa 2006 — leaves for Las Vegas on Friday with high hopes of bringing home the Miss America crown to Iowa.

“I am looking forward to going. It’s been seven months of preparation and I am more than ready and I just can’t wait to get out there and compete,” she said during an interview last week.

The Miss America Pageant is being held at the Aladdin Resort & Casino in Las Vegas with competition beginning on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

“I am really looking forward to every phase of the competition but I am most excited for talent. I can’t wait to get up on that stage.”

Nicholas, 21, is performing the Judy Garland classic, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” from the movie “The Wizard of Oz.”

Nicholas said some have questioned her choice of such a well-known piece of music.

“I do think it’s a risk but it’s one that I am willing to take.”
