Rehearsals, Rehearsals, Rehearsals!

The contestants quickly picked up the routine and relieved early jitters with practice! The women all began to show their humorous sides and had a lot of fun as they responded to my "practice" onstage questions with each of them.

During a break, my daughter Megan arrived with my granddaughter Madeline to meet the staff and contestants.  Maddie was right at home with all of us as mommy had dressed her up in her crown and roses logo tee shirt and red shoes to match "Gigi" and the contestants!
After rehearsals everyone enjoyed a gift exchange and settled into their rooms for a good night's sleep before competition day.

Mrs. Oregon International Pageant 2009 Begins!

The ladies arrived in the morning to get settled in at pageant central.   After an orientation of the weekend's events, the ladies gathered in the lobby for photos and to catch up with each other since the workshop in February.
Pageant activities quickly began as a Hummer limo arrived to take the ladies for lunch at Thirst Bistro and an afternoon of shopping at some of Lake Oswego's shopping hot spots.
After a fabulous lunch and picking up some fun fashion accessories it was back to the hotel to get down to business and rehearsals.

Mrs. Illinois United States 2009 to be crowned May 10th!!!

I just want to remind the ILLINOIS, MISSOURI, OHIO and TENNESSEE ladies to contact Vanbros Associates to get involved with their premiere Pageant Directing year for Mrs. United States Prelims! -- Website: http://www.vanbros.com/unitedstates.html
One thing I’ve been BLESSED with from January 2008 – now is to serve my communities as Mrs. Illinois United States and act as an advocate for Illinois Children’s Health – with Congressman Bill Foster on National Health Insurance for kids in need (needed more now than ever), reforming the No Child Left Behind Act, and educating those families at risk in our community about healthy living for their bodies, minds, spirits and our earth. I guess you can say my ‘platform’ as Mrs. Illinois grew quite a bit with all the people I’ve met these last 13 months. ;-)

Toddlers and Tiaras: Breaking the Stereotype?

clipped from arkansasmatters.com
The beauty pageant circuit is a
multi-billion dollar industry and approximately 300,000 children compete in
them every year.

Recent shows highlight the glitz and
glam of some of these pageants and sometimes draw criticism about their
appropriateness. But some pageant goers say it's not all like that.

In Conway today it was the preliminaries for
the Cinderella pageant-one they call all natural.

The girls are discouraged from
wearing make-up, hair pieces or from tanning. They compete in their Sunday best
and in casual wear. And as the economy has weakened some say these pageants are
the only alternative to the big bucks required at the glitzier shows.

Many of the contestants today have
competed in only a few pageants. Parents say the Cinderella pageant can
sometimes be a stepping stone to the glitz pageants we see on TV but a number
of moms say they'd draw the line before it went too far.

We want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Miss Mississippi's Outstanding Teen 2007, Jasmine Murray, who made it into the Top 13 on American Idol. She was radiant and truly represented this program with class and grace. After Jasmine completed her time on the show, she did a media tour where she got to be a guest on the Regis and Kelly Show and the Ellen Degeneres Show. We know this is just the beginning and we are looking forward to supporting Jasmine in all of her future endeavors!

Orlando, FL-- March 23, 2009 - The Miss America's Outstanding Teen Organization announced today that Bill O'Dowd, Emmy-nominated producer and President of Dolphin Entertainment, accepted the invitation to join the MAOT Board of Directors.

The Miss America's Outstanding Teen program is scholarship-based and allows young women to showcase their accomplishments and awards the most outstanding young women with college funds. The organization not only promotes scholastic achievement, but also community involvement, creative accomplishment, and healthy living.

Mr. O'Dowd founded Dolphin Entertainment in 1996, and it has since gone to become one of the leading independent producers of family programming. His experience spans wide genres of television and film, from movies and mini-series to sitcoms and drama series. Additionally, Dolphin Entertainment recently secured a $100 million film fund for an upcoming slate of six features, the first of which will be based on the highly inspirational true story of shark attack survivor and professional surfer Bethany Hamilton. O'Dowd also resides as CEO and Chairman of Dolphin Digital Media, a publicly-traded technology company dedicated to providing solutions for keeping children safer on the Internet. Mr. O'Dowd graduated with honors from Harvard Law School, has received a master's degree in modern European History from Creighton University, and was named 1st-Team Academic All-American by USA Today while an undergraduate at Creighton.

"I'm pleased to welcome Bill O'Dowd to the MAOT Board of Directors," said Donna Bozarth, Chairman of the Board. "His company works to promote wholesome programming for teens and tweens and also helps to educate everyone about the entertainment industry. We feel he's doing an incredible service for teens and their families and are excited to have him join our team."

Dolphin Entertainment has been involved with MAOT since 2008 and was last year's talent sponsor. Additionally, MAOT and Dolphin Entertainment partnered together for a workshop series.

Mr. O'Dowd will join the MAOT Board of Directors consisting of 12 business leaders from various parts of the United States. The Chairwoman of the Board is Donna Bozarth of Orlando, Florida.

The LA Experience is a summer trip to Los Angeles where students gain an exclusive insider's guide to the entertainment industry. We limit our trips to 12 families and guest speakers are comprised of our friends and colleagues who donate their time because of their shared commitment to encouraging the country's most talented young performers. Students will get a chance to meet with a variety of individuals that play a crucial role in the industry including writers, producers, and directors. They will also have the unique chance to audition for and receive performance feedback from Executive Producer Bill O'Dowd and industry leading talent agents and casting directors. In previous years the LA Experience has had Sharon Lieblein, the head of casting for Nickelodeon, Joey Paul, who casts for Disney and Cindy Osbrink who represents Dakota Fanning. Finally, students will meet with actors and their parents to get a personal account of their experiences as they have transitioned into the industry and moved to Los Angeles.

PLATFORM SPOTLIGHT

Miss Tennessee's Outstanding Teen 2008- Madyson Foster

Madyson Foster, Miss TN OT, has been volunteering with the Ronald McDonald House long before she ever decided to compete in MAOT. It was an easy choice when it came time to pick a platform. From January 2008 through May 2008, she decided to organize a volunteer program for her local school system and called it the Common Cents program. It collects spare change for the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. The Care Mobile provides dental care for at-risk children that can't receive dental care or just do not have insurance. The winning class at each school wins a Happy Meal Party sponsored by local McDonald restaurants. Also, her high school's Beta Club helped out tremendously by counting the money and bringing the Happy Meals. She had an incredible turnout! Four schools participated: Blythe Bower Elementary, Mayfield Elementary, Arnold Elementary, and Cleveland High School. With all these schools combined, they raised over $1,500 just in spare change!

Madyson has also participated in several other activities with the Ronald McDonald House. For the past three years, she has been chosen to be the Vanna girl on Chattanooga's Ronald McDonald House Telethon. Channel 9 also collaborated and it was broadcast on TV. She has also dressed up as Wonder Woman and Sully from Monsters Inc. at their Autumn Children's Festival and also ran a makeup booth as Tennessee's Outstanding Teen.

Being involved with the program has taught her to be self-confident, poised, fun, organized, and importantly to be herself and she said that the program will always stay close to her heart!
Great job Madyson!

Miss Delaware's Outstanding Teen- Amanda Debus

The Delaware State Office of Volunteerism has announced that Amanda Debus is the recipient of The Governors Youth Volunteer Service Award in the area of Public Safety! Amanda is one of nineteen young adults chosen from throughout the state for her excellence in service to others. This award celebrates the volunteer efforts of Delaware's youth, and includes the areas of community service, public safety, human needs, social justice advocacy, environmental, arts and culture, and education. Amanda is being recognized for her service to public safety in her efforts to educate children about fire safety and prevention. Although only a high school junior, Amanda serves as an active member of the Volunteer Hose Company in Middletown, Delaware. As Miss Delaware's Outstanding Teen 2008, Amanda has been an advocate for her platform, "SAFETY: Safety and Fire Education for Today's Youth." Wearing her fire suit and crown, Amanda visits schools to educate youth about fire safety and prevention. Amanda is truly an authentic role model for children and an example to young girls that they can be whatever they choose to be!

Amanda was nominated by Mrs. Melanie Hatter. A valuable Miss Delaware volunteer, Melanie serves as Dressing Room "Mom" for the Miss Delaware and Miss Delaware's Outstanding Teen Pageants. Melanie is an Accounting Specialist for the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.

Amanda will be honored at an Awards Ceremony April 23 at Dover Downs Hotel. Amanda's home school, Middletown High School, will also be recognized. Gov. Jack Markell will present the awards. The public is invited to attend. Registration begins at 4:30 pm. Hors d'oeuvres will be served from 5:00-6:00. The Awards Ceremony will begin at 6:00 pm. Reservations are $25 per person. For a reservation form and more information, visit:www.volunteerdelaware.org

Congratulations Amanda!

Miss Pennsylvania's Outstanding Teen- Julia Rae Schlucter

Julia just returned from Clearwater, FL where she was asked to sing the National Anthem for the Philadelphia Phillies, the 2008 World Series Champions! Julia had an amazing time and was able to meet several of the players and take pictures with pitcher Jamie Moyer and catcher Carlos Ruiz.

Miss Oregon's Outstanding Teen - JoAnna Adkisson

In celebration on JoAnna's 18th Birthday, she decided to throw a Birthday Book Bash at Border's this past weekend. She signed autographs, shared birthday cake with customers, distributed information about the Miss Oregon's Outstanding Teen program and the Children's Miracle Network. As JoAnna anticipated turning 18, she knew that she wanted to celebrate in a way that was out of the ordinary and that would have a significant impact on the children that she has met during her year of service.
JoAnna said, "Having met so many wonderful children and families facing medical crisis this year I have seen first hand how confusing and frightening a hospital stay can be for them. I have learned that familiar experiences such as reading can be a great help in calming some of those issues. As I was anticipating turning 18 I knew that I wanted to celebrate in a way that was out of the ordinary and that would have a significant impact on those children."

Much to JoAnna's delight, customers came out in droves on Saturday and donated over 250 new books which JoAnna will present to Skylakes Medical Center Pediatric Unit and Oregon's three Children's Miracle Network hospitals!!

Happy Birthday JoAnna and Great Job!

Miss Utah's Outstanding Teen!

Congratulations to Meredith Gaufin, who recently was recognized as one of the 50 most fabulous people in Utah Valley. Here is what the magazine had to say about her:

MEREDITH GAUFIN

"Outstanding" may be the official adjective used to describe Meredith Gaufin, but beautiful, talented, smart and giving would work just as well. Meredith, of Provo, was crowned Miss Utah's Outstanding Teen in October 2008.
The 17-year old attends Timpview High School where she is ranked No. 1 in her junior class of 474. She is on the Honor Roll, is a varsity cheerleader and a founding member of the Green Team, a recycling program at the school.
Meredith's platform for the scholarship program centers on helping children with cancer in Utah. She has already raised more than $1,000 for the Children with Cancer Christmas Foundation. The funds went to 90 families with children affected by cancer.

"I decided to raise money for the organization after one of my sister's friends was diagnosed with cancer and I saw the toll that it took on her family," says Meredith, who would like to be a pediatric oncologist.
Meredith plans to raise more money for the foundation at a summer luau and golf tournament. .
