In Loving Memory - Miss America 1952 Colleen Kay Hutchins

In Loving Memory

Miss America 1952 Colleen Kay Hutchins

Our beloved Miss America 1952 Colleen Kay Hutchins passed away early this morning in her home in Newport Beach, California at the age of 83, according to her son, Kiki Vandeweghe. Kiki said his mother had been ill for about six months.

Colleen was a Salt Lake City resident when she was crowned as Brigham Young University Homecoming Queen in 1947. Five years later she won the Miss America title. Crowned just prior to the television era, Colleen graciously stood over six feet in heels, and was said to have stopped a basketball game at the University of Pennsylvania by arriving late and walking down the sidelines. As a Miss America contestant she was not only an accomplished athlete, but had already achieved an undergraduate degree and was well on her way to earning a Master's Degree in Drama.

Following Colleen's year of service as Miss America, she performed on Broadway and toured Europe. She married her husband who was a physician and a member of the New York Knicks. They honeymooned at Queen Elizabeth's Coronation. The Hutchins made Wiesbaden, Germany, their home for some time, developing lifelong friendships with many prominent Europeans. They later settled in Bel Air, California, and raised four All-American College and Olympic athletes who are now accomplished professionals in their own right. Colleen and her family have enjoyed a happy and fulfilling life, contributing to many social and community causes. She resided in Palm Springs, California, and devoted much energy to her philanthropic objectives and enjoyed the opportunity of guiding her grandchildren in their athletic and scholastic accomplishments.

Colleen is survived by her husband and four children, including Kiki Vandeweghe, who is the interim coach and general manager of the NBA's New Jersey Nets.

Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to Colleen's family at this time of sorrow.  We will treasure the memories and the legacy of our beloved Miss America 1952 Colleen Hutchins.

Blogging from San Francisco Airport

The first weekend of March I drove to Tulare County with Kathi Baldwin for the Miss Tulare County pageant. We had a great time! Everyone was so very sweet and hospitable and I stayed with the Smiths which was too fun! The pageant was wonderful and I had so much fun with the contestants at rehearsals and during interviews! And I had an incredible dinner before the pageant with the judges... complete with creme brulee! Yum! Congratulations to Anne Baker, Miss Tulare County 2010!
The next morning Kathi and I left bright and early and headed down to Malibu for Isabella's birthday party. It was a great day and the girls had their own sashes, had a chance to show their talents and had fun learning about the different phases of competition. Happy Birthday Isabella and thank you for inviting me to your party!

Wife Swap Teen Beauty Queen Suing ABC

clipped from thestir.cafemom.com

But this latest drama that involves a child getting bullied, is making me a little bit uncomfortable.

Alicia Guastaferro appeared on Wife Swap with her absolutely appalling parents two years ago where she became known as the biggest brat in America. Now she's eighteen and is suing ABC for $100 million accusing the show of misrepresenting her. The pageant winner has faced taunting, online and in real life after she said on national television that she felt sorry for people who were not gorgeous, and showed off her pageant glam and "sparkle."

Guastaferro also claims the mistreatment was the reason she went from being on the honor roll to a special eduction class. (Although it's obvious from watching the show the school discovered her parents were doing her homework, and put a stop to it. That would make your grades drop pretty danged quickly.)

Go Red for Women

Being that February is Heart Month, every year at the Sheraton the American Heart Association has a Go Red for Women luncheon and fashion show. I had the honor of being a part of it and modeling my Heather French Henry gown from Miss America. This year they had to have it in the atrium and ballroom of the hotel in order to seat the number of guests that attended! All of the models looked fabulous. Local businesses had women model their fashions in support of heart health awareness.

Pageant Makeup Tips from Gaspar Cruz

Gaspar Cruz, founder of Miss Teen World, has been responsible for coaching more titleholders to the crown than I can list without getting carpal tunnel. :) He has also been responsible for the makeup of Beyonce, Faith Hill and other celebrities…including our newest celebrity, Miss America, Caressa Cameron. Gaspar not only has one of the highest success records of any pageant coach that I have heard of but is also known throughout the country as a makeup artist and evening gown designer.

Steven: What’s the difference between stage makeup and interview makeup?

During your pageant interview you need to apply a full face…lashes, eyeliner, foundation, lips…the works. The difference between stage makeup and interview makeup is that you do not need to go as dark.
