Image: Miss Universe fighting AIDS in India

Miss Universe Zuleyka Rivera, who is visiting India to spread awareness on HIV/AIDS, had to cut short her walk through Kamathipura.

The huge crowd that had gathered to catch a glimpse of Rivera went berserk and the police had to advice her to cancel the programme.

Rivera's bodyguards were also concerned with her security and promptly cancelled the walk, taking her back to the hotel.

Winning life's pageant and living well with diabetes

Wednesday, October 25, 2006 By David Templeton, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Standing in her evening gown as finalist in the 1999 Miss America pageant, Miss Virginia was awaiting the judges' decision when one motioned to her.

Andy Starnes, Post-Gazette
Nicole Johnson Baker shows her Dexcom continuous glucose sensor to her 9-month-old daughter, Ava. The wireless sensor allows Ms. Johnson Baker, who has Type I diabetes, to continuously monitor her glucose levels.

"Are you wearing it?" he asked. "If so, where is it?"

The judge was curious. Where had Nicole Johnson stashed her insulin pump? She quietly told him she'd strapped it inside her leg to keep it hidden under the form-fitting gown.

Nicole Johnson Baker, Miss America 1999, is a Type I diabetic, diagnosed at 19. During the pageant she talked much about her diabetes. But overcoming its challenges to emerge as Miss America is the story behind her accomplishment.

"Never to my knowledge was a Miss America contestant wearing an external medical device, other than a hearing aid," she said. "Young diabetic patients love hearing that story."

Diabetes requires discipline and continual maintenance. But, as Ms. Johnson Baker proves, it's no obstacle to success.

Six ready for Hall of Fame

Morrilton native Lencola Sullivan-Verseveldt is surprised that something she did 26 years ago still has the impact it has today.

“I was just trying to earn scholarship money to get to school and ended up making history,” says the first black winner of the Miss Arkansas pageant.

And, too, she was angry.

That’s what helped her win the pageant in the first place — “being angry about something,” she says: The “something” was the negative perception about Arkansas harbored by nonresidents.

Brubaker didn’t help matters. The 1980 Robert Redford movie, about a warden’s quest to clean up extreme corruption at an Arkansas prison farm, got Sullivan-Verseveldt wondering what she could do to tear down the stereotypes about her home state. “That became my mission,” she says.

She feels that winning the title “really did help. And it did so many other things that I never dreamed it would do.” Like becoming one of the first black women, along with Miss Washington, Doris Janell Hayes, to win a preliminary award at the 1980 Miss America pageant. Like becoming fourth runner-up to Miss America and the first black contestant to place among the Top Five in the pageant.

Like earning her a spot in the 2006 Arkansas Black Hall of Fame.

Sullivan-Verseveldt says she is “extremely honored” to be chosen to be inducted at the 14 th annual induction ceremony, Saturday at the Statehouse Convention Center.

Other inductees are: Oliver Baker, endowed professor of physics at Hampton University, a staff physicist at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility and researcher of elementary particles and nuclei. Glenn Johnson, the second black to serve on the Illinois Appellate Court. Emma Kelly Rhodes, a high school dropout and mother of seven who earned her General Education Development diploma as a widowed 24-year-old, then went on to earn a doctorate and serve as coordinator of the state’s adult education program.

Henry Shead, a musician whose talents led to his work with such entertainers as Dinah Shore, Johnny Carson and Jerry Lewis. The late Charles Bussey, the first black mayor of Little Rock and the first black to serve on the city’s board of directors since Reconstruction.

When Sullivan-Verseveldt saw the list of past Arkansas Black Hall of Fame winners, she “was blown away by the caliber of people that were inducted.” Sullivan-Verseveldt now lives in Zoetermeer in the Netherlands with her husband, Roel P. Verseveldt.

But one of the requirements for inductees is that they make a positive impact on their state, their country and their world, and she did so... long after her year as Miss Arkansas.

Miss Malibu 2006 – Not your typical beauty queen

Andi Walker
Staff Writer

MalibuMiss Malibu 2006 - Michelena Erickson

When thinking about a beauty pageant, most people imagine the beautiful dresses and silly talent routines. But Miss Malibu 2006 has much more to offer than an average beauty pageant contestant and with the Miss California Pageant this weekend (Oct. 14-15) , she is preparing to obtain another crown.

Michelena Erickson, a senior at Pepperdine, became the second Miss Malibu to be crowned. Erickson impressed the judges with her heart for service and knowledge of Malibu. She will be participating in the Miss California competition in San Francisco.

Erickson battled 13 other women in April at Pepperdine’s Smothers Theatre. Ironically, all of the contestants were students at Pepperdine. Ashley Jay, another Pepperdine student, was Miss Malibu 2005. Knowing Erickson’s desire to better herself and the community around her, Jay suggested Erickson compete in Miss Malibu.

Erickson recognizes that she has been through many struggles for her age and has not only overcome them, but strives to help others do the same. Her knowledge and thoughtfulness made her stand out against the other women. During the pageant, the participants had one-on-one interviews with the judges as well as participating in bathing suit and formal attire competitions.

MalibuMiss Malibu 2006 - Michelena Erickson

There were two turning points in the competition where girls were eliminated. First, one of the questions asked to the women was, “What motto do you live your life by?” “Not to judge others. It’s almost an impossible thing to accomplish but it is something that should always be at the top of your head so you can try to be a better person,” Erickson honestly replied. Once the competition was down to only three women - Michelena Erickson, CheVonne Burton and Eryn Longobardi – a final question weeded out Erickson from the other two girls.

The women were then asked to talk about something they wished to change about Malibu. Both of the other candidates gave the same response: they would like to see more female leadership in Malibu.

But Erickson added a different spin to her answer. She wanted to change the controversial proposal of the Liquid Natural Gas plants to be developed two miles off the Malibu Coast. “This is what I would want changed so the beautiful coastline was not ruined by such an eyesore and our environment isn’t damaged more than it already is,” stated Erickson.

Beauty pageant sparks row

Posted: Thursday, October 12, 2006

Dubai

Dubai’s police chief has criticised a beauty pageant being advertised by mysterious organisers, saying it encourages nudity and contradicts the religion and culture of the UAE.

“I personally will never allow any beauty contest to carry the name of the UAE
as this does not represent the UAE in any way,” Major-General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim said in remarks published in Press reports.

“We don’t want to encourage national women to (indulge in) nudity,” he was quoted as saying, “as beauty contests require the appearance of the contestants in outfits which contradict with our culture and religion”.

'Miss Paula' is N.C.'s Queen Maker

Top state-pageant coordinator has launched more than her share of Cinderella stories

AIKEN, S.C. -- Careers of some of the nation's most beautiful women have been launched from Paula Miles' rambling five-bedroom home in the gated Woodside Plantation community.
Actresses, models, talk show hosts, singers, broadcast journalists.
All have one thing in common: They won beauty competitions staged by Miles, a wife and mother who reigns as Miss Universe Inc.'s longest tenured and most successful state pageant director.

Four Miss USAs, two Miss Teen USAs, one Miss World, and one Miss Universe made it to the top by first winning pageants produced by Miles. An additional 36 of her winners were finalists in those pageants, including five who were first runner-up.

That's a record, says Frank Sweeney, who hired Miles for the job in 1979.
"Forgive me for using a sports analogy, but she has had more kids in the playoffs than anybody else in history," Sweeney says.

"Her very first year, she had Shawn Weatherly win Miss USA and then Miss Universe. How's that for a home run? I know I was impressed. Her record is phenomenal, and what's most surprising is that not even she can tell you how she does it."

Miles is so modest that she refuses to be introduced at her pageants, the next of which is Miss North Carolina USA Friday and Saturday in High Point.

To her, this is a hobby that got out of hand.

She now runs six annual pageants in three states, and she's hoping to add a fourth state.
