Lauren, Lauren -n-Lauren aka Miss America & Miss South Carolina

This is MAOT's Miss South Carolina Lauren Lytle aceing her on stage question(IMO) read to her by Miss America Lauren Nelson. I was a witness sitting only a few feet away taking this photo. Poor girl is getting confused with the other Miss South Carolina from Teen USA. Both are blonde and beautiful so it's an easy mistake. I've read Lauren from MAOT has a 4.6 GPA wow! You go girl.

Ex-Miss Universe Sushmita Sen plans autobiography

Associated Press
Last updated 03:41pm (Mla time) 08/29/2007

MUMBAI, India -- Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen has decided to write an autobiography with the tentative title "The Butterfly."

A former Miss Universe, Sen said she has begun writing chapters, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

She said the inspiration for the title came from one of her favorite sayings -- "what the world calls the end of a caterpillar's life, God calls a butterfly."

"I have written some portions of it," The Times of India newspaper quoted Sen saying. "And yes, the working title is called 'The Butterfly.'"

Miss Teen USA 2007 - Tim's Notes

Another year and we have another Miss Teen USA pageant. The giant comic-book themed stage was ready for the task and the cameramen ready to pull in and out on the zoom lens until I fell out of my seat dizzy around an hour into the broadcast.

Mario Lopez, who is quickly becoming the new Pageant MC for hire in the industry, did another solid job as he announced the top 15 early in the show (in the order announced):

Alabama, Kansas, Tennessee, Wyoming, Colorado, Virginia, Hawaii, West Virginia, New Jersey, South Carolina, Minnesota, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Illinois and New Mexico

I found myself lost, because I had interview two participants this year: Georgia's Jenna Sims and Indiana's Victoria Tomlinson and neither were moving on the in the competition. As I pondered who I would be cheering for now; Mario introduced the judges and I noticed something odd: there appeared to be a "Kid's Table" for the judges. All the young, hot celebrities were in the first five chairs and the next five were the older, mature business folks and established celebrities.

At some point, I wanted that thought balloon on stage to read "What's with the Kid's Table?" instead of "Just Be Yourself." I had a couple other thoughts for up in the balloon, but I'm behaving myself.

Top Ten was announced after swimsuit (thought balloon should have read: "Modesty is SOooo 1993."):

Alabama, West Virginia, Virginia, South Carolina, Rhode Island, North Carolina, New Jersey, Minnesota, Kansas, Colorado

It was time for evening gown (to the elegant music of -- the Jonas Brothers?) and Photogenic (Maryland) and Congeniality (Mississippi) were announced.

Top 5: South Carolina, Colorado, West Virginia, North Carolina, New Jersey

Okay. Final question. Yes, South Carolina's answer was not good. She choked under the pressure, but that is all. She simply choked. When an athlete doesn't perform at the "big game," he or she choked. We don't claim they never had skill to begin with. These critics shouting that this proves Pageant Girls are all stupid--when an average 3.6 GPA or something was broadcast earlier in the show--is simply goofy. Particularly with Colorado's brave answer ("They are NOT my role models.") to the Nicole, Paris, Lindsey question and a knock-out answer by New Jersey about public speaking skills. Get over yourselves, critics. Lest you be put on national television to be ridiculed. We've even created a whole game show based on this "choking" behavior on television: "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader."

I should note also that our most recent interviewee, Paula Miles, is the director with two Top Five ladies at Miss Teen USA. That show just released this week and really is an exciting one to hear!

Okay, final results:
4th Runner Up - West Virginia
3rd Runner Up - South Carolina
2nd Runner Up - North Carolina
1st Runner Up - New Jersey
Miss Teen USA 2007: Colorado, Hilary Carol Cruz

Congratulations, Hilary, and have a spectacular year!

Colorado Woman Crowned Miss Teen USA

PASADENA, Calif. -

An 18-year-old Colorado woman who aspires to become an entertainment journalist was crowned Miss Teen USA 2007 during a live Friday night ceremony.

Miss Teen Colorado Hilary Carol Cruz received her crown from outgoing Miss Teen USA Katie Blair at the conclusion of the two-hour competition at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium broadcast on NBC-TV.

Blair's reign was marked by controversy last year when Mothers Against Drunk Driving announced it was severing its ties with the Miss Teen USA organization. The announcement came after news reports surfaced that the 18-year-old Billings, Mont., woman had been seen partying in New York City nightclubs with Miss USA Tara Conner.

At Miss Teen USA Pageant, South Carolina Fumbles

Liz Miller
Posted August 25, 2007
Sure, you could write off Miss South Carolina Teen USA Caitlin Upton's spectacular fumble of the question "Why can't twenty percent of Americans find America on a map?" as just another example of an over-tanned bimbo trying to sound smarter than she is. Or perhaps you could try to see her verbal stumbling as a post-modern attempt to illustrate this country's crumbling education system. With each repetition of the word "America," imagine Caitlin pleading for Congress to reexamine No Child Left Behind and other educational reforms of the past ten years. Imagine her reaching out, for something better.

Editor's Note: Because this is really taking off with views on You Tube, I'm putting this up here for you to see. I'd like to see how these tongue clicking critics would do when faced with any simple question on national TV competing for the dream of their lifetime. We call athletes that do this "chokers" but when it's in a pageant, they were just stupid or untalented to begin with. Hmmm.

It's not easy being Miss World

Taťána Kuchařová promotes pet causes around the globe

By Julie O'Shea
Staff Writer, The Prague Post
August 22nd, 2007

COURTESY PHOTO
Kuchařová beat out 105 beauty queens from other countries to win this year's Miss World crown. Her "life-changing experience" includes a hectic travel schedule.
Miss World is expected to raise $10 million for charity during her reign.
Taťána Kuchařová wants to make one thing perfectly clear: She is not just another dumb blonde. “Many people think that when you’re a model you are stupid; when you’re blonde you’re stupid. But there is so much more [to me] than that,” Kuchařová says between sips of water at Chez Marcel Sur La Butte, a quaint little French bistro in the heart of Vinohrady, where she recently stopped by for an early afternoon chat. “I want to do work that is deeper than modeling,” she says. “I like modeling, but it’s only my hobby.” The statement is a little surprising coming from a woman who only last year was quoted as saying she dreamed of one day having a professional career on the catwalk. Kuchařová seems genuinely surprised when reminded of this, adamantly shaking her head at this “false” image that’s been circulated on the Internet. As it turns out, a lot can change in 12 months. Last September, Kuchařová was crowned Miss World, the first Czech woman to hold the title; nine months later, she graduated from high school. She will start taking classes this fall at Prague’s University of Public Administration and International Relations and now hopes to someday represent the country as an ambassador.“I’ve met a lot of people from government,” she says. “I would love to continue representing our country abroad.”‘Not just a beauty contest’ Since winning her crown, Kuchařová, 19, has been flying all over the world, helping to raise millions of dollars for various charities associated with the Miss World Organization. “It’s not just a beauty contest, even though a lot of people think it is,” she says of the competition that was held in Poland last fall. “It’s about doing important things. It’s about helping charities — we want to help everyone.”Indeed, Miss World officials report that the organization has funneled roughly half a billion dollars into numerous charities over the past 33 years of its existence. By the time Kuchařová’s reign comes to a close this December, her bosses estimate this university-bound student will have added another $10 million (207 million Kč) to the pot.“The job of being Miss World is a very serious one. It has amazing highs and amazing lows,” explains Steve Douglas, the group’s director of events. “Miss World is an ambassador. She has to be able to translate her thoughts into words, because just looking at her won’t cut it.”But looks are important, right? Could, say, an ugly, overweight woman with dynamic public speaking skills ever be Miss World?

New Jersey lass wins Miss Philippines-America tilt

By RODNEY J. JALECOa

ABS-CBN North America News Bureau

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia -- A beauty contest sans swimsuits, where contestants don’t have to sell ballots to win and are still able to draw the crowd and sponsors. For the past 22 years, that has been the winning formula for the 45,000-strong Filipino American community here.

The Miss Philippines America pageant is one of the oldest and most prestigious Fil-Am beauty contests in North America’s eastern seaboard. Over the years, it has drawn contestants from as far north as Canada, all the way south to Florida.

Dr. Manny Hipol, a retired US Navy captain and chief organizer of the pageant, explained that Fil-Am community leaders thought of the concept in the early 1980s to offer an alternative to the common practice among beauty competitions then.

Most pageants, he explained, were fund-raising tools for their organizers. Notwithstanding the ultimate beneficiaries of such projects, Dr. Hipol said pageants lost their original purpose to celebrate the noblest virtues of young Fil-Am women.

"True beauty became only secondary," he observed.

When the pageant was launched, organizers also decided to shun the popular swimsuit category. The Filipinos in Hampton Roads – which lumps southern Virginia’s coastal cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Newport News and Chesapeake, among others – is composed mainly of retired US Navy servicemen. In fact, Dr. Hipol says, 90 percent of the Fil-Am community here can trace their roots to service in US Navy.

"We feel like celebrities," Devin Grissom, Miss Outstanding Teen Tennessee said.

Ex-Miss America urges: Get HIV test

Kate Shindle

Kate Shindle

Kate Shindle, Miss America of 1998, will be in Bedford-Stuyvesant next Tuesday, urging people to get tested for HIV/AIDS.

More than 5,000 residents of Bedford-Stuyvesant have the disease, making that community one of the city's hardest hit.

"Ninety percent of my job as Miss America was advocating on behalf of AIDS issues," Shindle said in a statement issued by Housing Works, the agency sponsoring her visit.

"I had hoped almost 10years later we would have more answers," Shindle said. "However, there is still an urgent need for New Yorkers to be aware of their HIV status and educated on how to protect themselves ..."

Shindle, who's now starring in the Broadway musical "Legally Blonde," is to take an HIV test herself to show how simple the procedure is. She's scheduled to visit the mobile unit from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. It will be parked on the corner of Fulton St. and Nostrand Ave. from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. next Tuesday, offering free tests and counseling.
