Miss Teen USA 2007 - Tim's Notes

Another year and we have another Miss Teen USA pageant. The giant comic-book themed stage was ready for the task and the cameramen ready to pull in and out on the zoom lens until I fell out of my seat dizzy around an hour into the broadcast.

Mario Lopez, who is quickly becoming the new Pageant MC for hire in the industry, did another solid job as he announced the top 15 early in the show (in the order announced):

Alabama, Kansas, Tennessee, Wyoming, Colorado, Virginia, Hawaii, West Virginia, New Jersey, South Carolina, Minnesota, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Illinois and New Mexico

I found myself lost, because I had interview two participants this year: Georgia's Jenna Sims and Indiana's Victoria Tomlinson and neither were moving on the in the competition. As I pondered who I would be cheering for now; Mario introduced the judges and I noticed something odd: there appeared to be a "Kid's Table" for the judges. All the young, hot celebrities were in the first five chairs and the next five were the older, mature business folks and established celebrities.

At some point, I wanted that thought balloon on stage to read "What's with the Kid's Table?" instead of "Just Be Yourself." I had a couple other thoughts for up in the balloon, but I'm behaving myself.

Top Ten was announced after swimsuit (thought balloon should have read: "Modesty is SOooo 1993."):

Alabama, West Virginia, Virginia, South Carolina, Rhode Island, North Carolina, New Jersey, Minnesota, Kansas, Colorado

It was time for evening gown (to the elegant music of -- the Jonas Brothers?) and Photogenic (Maryland) and Congeniality (Mississippi) were announced.

Top 5: South Carolina, Colorado, West Virginia, North Carolina, New Jersey

Okay. Final question. Yes, South Carolina's answer was not good. She choked under the pressure, but that is all. She simply choked. When an athlete doesn't perform at the "big game," he or she choked. We don't claim they never had skill to begin with. These critics shouting that this proves Pageant Girls are all stupid--when an average 3.6 GPA or something was broadcast earlier in the show--is simply goofy. Particularly with Colorado's brave answer ("They are NOT my role models.") to the Nicole, Paris, Lindsey question and a knock-out answer by New Jersey about public speaking skills. Get over yourselves, critics. Lest you be put on national television to be ridiculed. We've even created a whole game show based on this "choking" behavior on television: "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader."

I should note also that our most recent interviewee, Paula Miles, is the director with two Top Five ladies at Miss Teen USA. That show just released this week and really is an exciting one to hear!

Okay, final results:
4th Runner Up - West Virginia
3rd Runner Up - South Carolina
2nd Runner Up - North Carolina
1st Runner Up - New Jersey
Miss Teen USA 2007: Colorado, Hilary Carol Cruz

Congratulations, Hilary, and have a spectacular year!
