Heading for Vegas - and the big competition

Emily Hughes rolled up the legs of her jeans, climbed into the plush leather chair and dipped her feet into bubbling, hot water.

"You kind of caught me on an aesthetic day," Hughes said. "I'm usually running around school gyms."

The current Miss New Hampshire spent the day before fielding questions from hundreds of middle school students about life as a pageant winner, including which celebrities she knows and whether or not she thinks Miss USA deserved a second chance.

But yesterday's pedicure was the first of several appointments, including a manicure, tanning session and workout, that Hughes squeezed in before she left this morning for Las Vegas, where she will compete in the Miss America pageant Jan. 29. Her body needed a few last-minute updates, but Hughes said her mind is already in good shape.

"I kind of have a philosophy of, 'Don't sweat the small stuff,' " she said. "And people say, 'This isn't small; this is a big competition.' "
