Northern Ireland’s Miss Great Britain Gemma Garrett may be set to be the last
reigning queen of the beauty pageant.
The competition, which has been running for 64 years, has been cancelled for
2009 just one month before it’s glitzy ceremony.
Last year Belfast girl Gemma (27) was crowned queen and was officially due to
hang up her tiara in March.
However, at the weekend organiser Robert de Keyser admitted that he was
cancelling this year’s competition due to the credit crunch.
He added that he felt the economic downturn meant the event was failing to
attract enough wealthy patrons willing to buy tables.
If the competition never came back I could be 75 and saying ‘I’m Miss Great
Britain’
Meanwhile, Gemma is pursuing a TV and film career and after making cameo
appearances in a few indie films she’s just completed a role as Linda, a
sexy sidekick for the baddies in Direct Contact, due for release in April.
