After weeks of a reality show competition, and the staging in Planet Hollywood Las Vegas, the 2009 Miss America pageant looked a little more traditional than it had in the past as it crowned Miss Indiana Katie Stam the new queen.
The singer from Indianapolis was so shaken in winning she couldn't immediately respond to host Mario Lopez (taking a day off from hosting "Randy Jackson Present's America's Next Top Dance Crew").
There was a touch of reality show in the competition, as the field was made smaller by repeatedly by calling up, say, 12 finalists for the talent competition but only letting ten of them actually perform.
Lopez could hardly extract her from the gaggle of girls to talk. "Miss America, we're still on live television," he reminded her. Asking her how she felt, she still couldn't come up with one of those snappy 20 second answers.
