Junior Amanda Tapley is returning home to Samford this weekend with a crown and the title of Miss Alabama.

Junior pre-med and musical major Amanda Tapley, the reigning Miss Alabama, was crowned last June and has been busy touring the state promoting not only her platform, Music for a Cure, but also the Miss America Pageant.

Tapley said the most rewarding part of her time so far as Miss Alabama has been her opportunities to give back.

"I am a servant of the state, representing people of all walks of life throughout Alabama. It has been amazing to travel to all of these different places in Alabama and get to meet these people and become a role model or a source of encouragement for them," Tapley said.

She returned to Birmingham last week after spending three weeks filming a reality show in Los Angeles. TLC's "Countdown to the Crown" aired its first season last January and will run four weeks prior to the Miss America pageant this January.

Tapley said that TLC signed a contract with the Miss America Pageant in order to increase the pageant's viewership, after the show last year, the pageant's viewership increased from 3 million to 20 million viewers.
