[01/30/07] It was the female Super Bowl, as one contestant described it.

And holding the hopes of many Mississippians glued to their televisions Monday night, Miss Mississippi Taryn Foshee came pretty close to winning the championship ring - or crown.

“I'm truly ecstatic this morning,” said Pat Hopson, executive producer of the Miss Mississippi Pageant and franchise vice president. “Of course, I wanted her to win it all, but to be third runner-up to Miss America is quite an accomplishment.”

Miss Oklahoma Lauren Nelson took the crown and shared an emotional hug with outgoing Miss America Jennifer Berry, also from Oklahoma.

The win gave the state the honor of back-to-back Miss Americas - an honor only Mississippi had held, from when Mary Ann Mobley of Brandon crowned Lynda Lee Mead of Natchez in 1960.
