IF YOU saw the Miss America Pageant the other eve, airing from Las Vegas, you probably saw the former Miss America of 1971, Phyllis George, in action. Phyllis has been working to help restore the cachet of this institution.

Once a Miss America passes into history, we usually forget about her. But not Phyllis George. She has been the Miss America who counts. (The other one is ex-crown wearer Vanessa Williams. Resigning from her elected place after a flap about Penthouse nude photos, this beauty kept on in showbiz and now reigns as the mean queen diva on the hit series Ugly Betty.)

Phyllis herself had an abortive shot at becoming a CBS anchor, went on to be the first lady of Kentucky when she wed Gov. John Y. Brown, produced two handsome children, hustled Kentucky folk art all over the United States, ran a Chicken By George business, which she sold to Hormel, and also owns Phyllis George Beauty cosmetics and skincare.
