We've come a long way

COLLEEN Francisca got worried when she started winning a slew of titles onstage during the Miss Singapore World final in June.

'Maybe they're giving me these to shut me up and not give me the prize!' was what went through her mind then.

Colleen (left), The New Paper New Face 2003 runner-up, needn't have worried.

In addition to Miss Charming, Miss Body Beautiful, Best In Swimwear and Miss Chic Attitude, she also walked away with the crown.

The sub-awards tell us everything we need to know about her. If there was one for large, soulful eyes, she would have probably won that too.

She is one of two former The New Paper New Face girls who have won prestigious beauty pageants this year. The other is Miss Singapore International Genecia Luo. (See report on facing page.)

It has been a busy few weeks for Colleen, 24, who recently moved into her new home - a swanky two-storey house.

Despite a schedule packed with interviews, photoshoots and the launch of a new spa line for her company, The Cupcake Boutique, she has found time to unpack her impressive array of awards, which include Miss Tourism Queen of the Year 2004 and Miss Asia Pacific 2005.

She attributes her success to stage presence.

The Electric New Paper :

Being a beauty queen is no walk in the park

WHEN we met the current Miss Singapore International, Miss Genecia Luo, she was modelling for a magazine's bridal photospread at a grassy field near Marina City Park.

Constantly assaulted by ants, the otherwise cool and elegant Genecia, 23, couldn't help scratching her back.

Then there was a bee scare. And finally, she had to hike up her dress and totter across rock-strewn undergrowth in high-heeled shoes.

As she emphasised, being a beauty queen is no walk in the park.

Genecia, who was a New Face 2003 finalist, was also second runner-up at this year's Miss Singapore Universe contest.

The trick, she said, is self-awareness and being willing to change and learn.

'It's about maintaining yourself - the grooming. I'm a tomboy but I've to be ladylike, learn to speak well, learn to handle criticism, and also learn what suits me and what doesn't,' said Genecia, an occupational therapist.

She admitted that brickbats are an inevitable part of the experience.

'It's about understanding that every step you take, every word you say, people will notice. They will make remarks - whether constructive or not.'

It's clear that Genecia has matured from her New Face days. Back then, she answered in one-liners. Now, she seems a lot more serious.

It's obvious she has come a long way from the sporty tomboy lacking in confidence and weak at public speaking. In fact, she was a coach and judge at Miss Singapore Asia Pacific International 2006.

And part of it, she said, is thanks to the New Face contest.

'If you don't really know what modelling is like, or you want to experience the stage, the choreography, the cameras, the catwalk, the fashion show, the feel of a Victoria Secret's (catwalk show).

'If you watch America's Next Top Model and you go, oh, can I be something like that? The New Paper New Face will be the platform.'

After the contest, she got jobs in TV commercials and print ads, for brands like StarHub and Canon. She also appeared on TV shows, like Money No Problem and Durian King.

What advice does Genecia, who is preparing for the Miss International finals in Tokyo and Beijing in October, have for this year's New Face contestants?

'You must be very grounded. Yes, you want to be seen, you want to be heard, but don't lose yourself.'

Hi, I think this part is the missing bit of the entire article in the new paper.
