Fears for family

AUSTRALIA'S Miss World contestant Sabrina Houssami has not heard from her family in Lebanon for almost two weeks and is worried they may have been injured or killed.

The 20-year-old Muslim-Australian was born to a Lebanese father and an Indian mother, and has family stranded in war-torn Lebanon.

Ms Houssami said her father's uncle and his daughter and granddaughters were holidaying in Lebanon when fighting broke out last month. They were hoping to escape to Syria.

"It is very disturbing knowing that I have family over there and that they could be killed at any moment," Ms Houssami said in Sydney yesterday.

"It is one of the most unsettling things in my daily life right now."

Ms Houssami was crowned Miss World Australia last month in a controversial move. Instead of holding pageants, competition organisers simply announced her as the winner, citing time restrictions. She had been runner-up last year and was chosen because of her commitment to raising funds for charity.

She will spend a month in Warsaw, Poland, with contestants who will be judged by a specialist panel in various categories ranging from glamour, talent, fashion, sport and entertainment.
