Katie Millar wants to accomplish so much in the next 12 months that a day with only three appointments, often in completely different cities around the state, is considered "slow."

"My No. 1 focus right now is keeping my head above water," Millar said.

A 19-year-old BYU senior from Highland, Millar enjoys her newfound responsibility after being crowned Miss Utah 2006 on July 8, 2006. She will represent her state in the Miss America competition early next year.

Millar had several different reasons for participating in the Miss Utah competition.

"The Miss America Organization [which sponsors both the national and state competitions] is a scholarship program," said Millar, who plans to continue on to grad school after earning a bachelor's degree in neuroscience. "The only prize the contestants get is scholarship money, and that money can only be used for schooling."

Millar has earned over $13,000 in scholarships.
