Erin leaves scandal behind

August 17, 2006 12:00am

Thanks to a little controversy, our Miss Universe entrant's profile is now sky-high, writes Anna Edwards

SHE isn't scandalous, she insists. And it's hard not to believe the fresh-faced Australian Miss Universe contender Erin McNaught, 24, when she is sitting across the table from you.

Or when you see her posing in the heavily beaded, gorgeous dusty pink Bora gown which she wore in the Miss Universe pageant finals in Los Angeles last month.

While the Gold Coast-based McNaught didn't follow in her predecessor Jennifer Hawkins' footsteps and take out the Miss Universe title – she didn't make the top 20 – she did grab much of the attention and her fair share of the headlines in the lead-up to the final result.

First there was her controversial topless shot which was published in a men's magazine just before the Miss Universe competition was held.

Then there were news reports that McNaught had run out of clothing during the competition because she hadn't packed enough for her stay in Los Angeles.

Then she was splashed across the papers again for her popularity with Donald Trump, the man behind the Miss Universe pageant.

Trump picked McNaught and three other contestants to appear with him on The Late Show with David Letterman on the eve of the Miss Universe competition.

Did the publicity surrounding the "McNaughty" shots affect her chances or experience in the Miss Universe pageant?
