Erica Mahan has spent a lot of time shopping, but not for the usual pants and tops for the opening of another year of high school. This year she's shopping for "fancy stuff," clothing she'll wear as she represents Kansas at the Miss America Outstanding Teen competition in Orlando, Fla.

Preparation for the national contest has not been all fun and shopping trips, however. Much of her summer has been occupied by improving her interview skills, boning up on her platform of educating people not to drive drunk, and becoming more aware of news events. With the help of her mother and local pageant directors, she has given special attention to her opening and closing statements as she gets ready to face a panel of judges next week.

"I'm not really nervous," Mahan said. "I'm confident about what I'm doing and why I'm doing it."
