MONROE -- She thought she would just take a chance.

Tashonarae Brown, 16, has competed in four National American Miss Wisconsin pageants since 2003. This weekend, she placed in the top 15 of 53 girls in her age division. She also placed in four of the five optional categories for which she was entered: second runner-up in the talent, acting and casual wear modeling categories and first runner-up in the spokesmodel category.

"When I first got the stuff in the mail, it looked like a fun thing to do," said Tashanarae Brown, 16, of Monroe.

Little did Brown know that the chance she was taking would quickly open her eyes to a whole new world -- and a whole new way of being herself.

Brown entered the National American Miss Wisconsin Pageant, and last weekend, she found herself in Madison for her fourth competition since 2003.
