Beauty, brains: Miss Asia USA aims to be role model | Style | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Miss Asia USA Diane Yoo models a fuchsia Marchesa gown at her home in Katy. The pageant winner says she will use her reign to inspire young girls of Asian descent.
Diane Yoo knows the world isn’t kind to ditsy beauty queens.
Remember Miss South Carolina, who gave a bumbling answer about U.S. geography at the Miss Teen USA 2007 pageant? (If not, you can relive that moment on YouTube, where the video has received more than 30 million hits.)
Yoo, a 27-year-old Houston native who was recently crowned Miss Asia USA, hopes to change the stereotype that beauty and brains don’t go together.
“That’s one of the most common misconceptions,” says Yoo, who returned home recently for the Japan-America Society of Houston’s annual gala. “I’m passionate about fighting stereotypes. Beauty is not just skin deep, and I hope to prove that and let the world know that beauty comes in many shades.”
Wearing a fuchsia Marchesa gown and a sparkling crown at her parents’ home in Katy, Yoo said the title gives her the opportunity to educate more people about the pageant, which judges contestants on their cultural knowledge as well as their beauty, talent and intellect, she said.

America's Teen 2008, Laurie Kimsey: I am so Thankful!!
I am truly thankful for so many blessings in my life! The good Lord had definitely shined on me and allowed so many wonderful people and opportunities to come into my life! As we enter into the holidays I plan on reflecting and looking at my successes as well as my failures. I hope to continue to do well at the things I am good at doing, and improve on my weaknesses to become a better, stronger, more effective person. Thank you all for your support as America's Teen and I hope to continue to represent my title as a role model for youth, an advocate for cancer, and thankful blessed person that will never forget when I was invisible!
Blessings to all!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Dear Friends,
The holidays are officially upon us, which means in addition to cold weather, warm fires, and Christmas songs… it’s getting closer and closer to the 2009 Miss America Pageant. My year of service isn’t up yet though…
November 7 and 8 I had the great opportunity to speak to health professionals at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Rogers Memorial Hospital (both in Milwaukee) about eating disorders and their effect on the adolescent population. I love sharing my personal experiences with professionals as it offers them deeper insight into a patients perspective. It’s also good to share with them the importance of physicians being trained to recognize symptoms and complications related to eating disorders, as so many deadly cases go untreated because a doctor didn’t recognize a 17 year old’s heart attack as a consequence of her eating disorder. I was able to tour the facilities at Rogers Memorial Hospital which has in and outpatient services, as well as a residential treatment center. The hospital provides care and treatment not only for eating disorders, but also OCD, and severe panic and anxiety disorders, which are oftentimes, co-morbid with eating disorders. I spoke on Saturday evening at the hospital’s Foundation fundraising gala, about the importance and need for dialogue about mental illness, especially eating disorders. I congratulated them on their successes and their compassion for all those and their families who are affected. What an incredible and inspiring weekend.

Dancing with the Starzz « Miss Utah 2008
Saturday November 8th I attended a fundraiser for Utah’s Best Buddies program called, “Dancing with the Starzz.” It was organized so that each “buddy” would dance a duet with a “celebrity” in front of the whole audience. The “celebrities” had to come early to practice their dance with their “buddy.” In some cases there was a choreographer that helped with the dance, and in other cases the buddies made up their own dance and taught it to the “celebrity.” The Miss Utah USA organization works a lot with the Best Buddies program, so Miss Utah USA Julia Bachison, Miss Teen Utah USA Kate Feinstein, and Miss USA Crystle Stewart came to this event. What an honor it was for Utah to have Miss USA herself come to one of our events. Julia and Crystal danced with a Buddy and I was lucky enough to dance with my Buddy, Branon Fredrickson. Utah’s first lady, MaryKay Huntsman, was also a special guest that evening! The boys all danced with beauty queens, the first lady, or women that help with Best Buddies. The girls danced with the Real Soccer Mascot, a Jazz basketball player, and men that work for Best Buddies. It was such a fun event for everyone!! I know I mentioned a lot of queens that attended, but that’s not the last of them. Mrs. Utah attended and brought her friend Mrs. Arizona. The whole night was full of glamour and excitement. Chanel 5 News was there to take a few news clips. They even interview Branon and he was on TV!! It was a grand experience for all of the Buddies and the “celebrities.”Dancing with the Starzz « Miss Utah 2008
