Stylin' in poodle skirts and saddle shoes, 15 women will welcome Oshkosh to "A Night at the Hop." The 2007 Miss Oshkosh Scholarship Pageant kicks off at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Alberta Kimball Auditorium, where 15 Oshkosh-area contestants will vie for title of Miss Oshkosh and more than $10,000 in scholarship funds.
"They start with an afternoon interview with five judges, not from Oshkosh, and from there go into the evening competition," said Gert Schultz, pageant director.
Co-emceeing the event is the reigning Miss Oshkosh Janelle Larie and Miss Wisconsin Meghan Coffey. Now that it's her turn to pass down the crown, Larie feels mixed emotions.
"Of course it's sad; I just had such an enjoyable year … It was everything I thought it would be, and more," she said.
This year the pageant features newcomers as well as Miss Oshkosh veterans, such as 21-year-old Jennifer Schad, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh who is competing for the third consecutive year.
"The big reason is the scholarship money; it helps pay for books, part of tuition," she said. "Also, every year I come back I learn something new."
It's a night of entertainment and lending support to a good cause, Schultz said.
"This is a community event … Each and every girl that participates in the pageant does need support."
