IT IS due to financial concerns that the Barbados Tourism Authority has declined hosting the Miss Universe Show in 2008.

Last November, in another section of the media, it was announced that Barbados was invited to host the world's most prestigious pageant, Miss Universe, in 2008.

A proposal sent to the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) stated that the organisers were "pleased to announce that Barbados is being considered to host the three-week pageant", that would showcase Barbados before a worldwide audience.

However, the BTA has announced that it will decline. Corporate Communications Consultant Chay Davis told the Barbados Advocate Tuesday afternoon, "We are delighted that Barbados was considered as a possible venue to host the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant Contest in 2008. However, after careful consideration, a decision was made to decline the offer at this time, because the costs of staging the event proved too prohibitive."

Davis added that BTA has enjoyed a close working relationship with the management of Miss Universe "and we will certainly not rule out the possibility of staging this event in the future".
