Today marks her 21st birthday and Miss Alaska, Stephanie Wonchala of Eagle River, has camera crews capturing her every move as she participates this week in the filming of a behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of Miss America.

"Obviously, this will be a dry birthday celebration," she said last week, as she prepped for her trip to Los Angeles for the filming,

But there will be no celebrating with a legal drink.

Not for the very driven young woman who also holds the title of Miss Chugiak-Eagle River, which she'll give up this December.

"No way," she said when asked if having to conform to the expectation that title holders do not drink alcohol was a problem. "It just isn't that important to me."

What does matter to Wonchala - a 2003 graduate of Chugiak High School who has competed in local and state scholarship pageants for four years - is representing Alaska in the best way she can.
