The website of the 56th Miss World, being held in Poland, claims “International judges have their say alongside global vote” but it appears to be mere hype. Thanh Nien readers complained they were unable to vote for Thuy since she was not in the list. Thanh Nien correspondents verified the complaints by trying to vote for Thuy on the website http://missworldvote.client.ninesystems.com/signup.php but found they could not either. She has, however, been allotted the voting code MW 117. Each contestant is allotted a three-digit number for mobile SMS or WAP voting, online via www.missworld.com, or via national media in specific territories. Viewers can text the code of their favorite contestants to the broadcasters’ short-code mobile number. Voting closes on September30, eight hours before the final. Asked about the problem, modeling agency Elite, which represents Thuy, said it had faced the same problem last year when Huong Giang had represented Vietnam. Thuy Nga, an agency official, said organizers had then informed that communications expenses involved in the voting must be paid in advance. But people had voted freely through the Internet for Miss Vietnam Nguyen Thi Huyen at the 2004 Miss World pageant. Tien Phong newspaper, the organizer of Miss Vietnam 2006, was also astonished to learn that Thuy was the only contestant left out of the global vote. Tien Phong deputy editor-in-chief Nguyen Ngoc Nam said he had written and faxed a letter to the Vietnamese embassy in Poland. Thuy’s trip appears to have been jinxed from the start. A few days ago there were rumors circulating on the Internet that she had had a car accident, creating a furor in Vietnam. The Miss World competition began on Sep.2 and will last one month. |
