The business of beauty

They primped, preened and rehearsed hand placement on their hips.

Some strutted.

Some seemed shy as they queued for their entrances on the stage of Natrona County High School on Sunday.

All were pretty.

All flashed implausible Pepsodent smiles.

But those close to the Miss Wyoming USA and Miss Wyoming Teen USA pageants know that winning bonds beauty and business.

"'Look at me, I'm cute'; that's not what this is about," Miss Wyoming USA Kristin George of Casper said a few hours before passing the crown to the new Miss Wyoming USA Robyn Johnson of Sheridan.

During her year-long reign, George rode in parades; spoke in classrooms; held court in interviews; appeared on the Today Show, Kelly and Regis, TRL on MTV, Fox News; and spent three weeks in Baltimore preparing to look smashing in the 2006 Miss USA contest.

George already had experience as Miss Wyoming Teen USA in 2000, runner-up in two Miss Wyoming USA contests, and a graduate of the University of Wyoming-Casper College with associate degrees in psychology and paralegal training, and bachelor's degrees in psychology and social sciences.

She has bought one house, is buying another as a rental, and intends to move up the ladder in Pfizer Inc. beyond her current job as a pharmaceutical representative, she said.

"I've had a great time," Johnson said. "It's also great to pass that on to another girl."
