Miss Universe secret weapon

SHE is treading in the footsteps of Jennifer Hawkins - and like the Miss Universe 2004 entrant she is relying on a very Aussie approach to clinch the title.

Kimberley Busteed has chosen the iconic swimsuit and cap as her national costume for the glamorous pageant in Mexico City this month.

It draws on similar inspiration to Hawkins, who won the coveted crown in 2005, having gone the Aussie beach babe look in a bikini and sarong.

McNaught, who was Miss Universe Australia 2006 but missed out on the final prize, wore Steve Irwin-style bush gear as her national outfit.

Former swimming champion and surf lifesaving competitor Busteed, now 18, has no qualms about strutting in her red one-piece togs in front of a global audience.

"Portraying our beach image is going to be such a big hit," she said.

Since winning the Australian crown in Perth, the Gladstone beauty has undergone a rigorous week of preparation for her departure to Mexico on Tuesday for the May 28 pageant.
