Lawyer says sex sting humiliated disabled man

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. In their thirst to cash in on the celebrity of Miss America and boost ratings for “America’s Most Wanted,” the TV show’s producers and Suffolk County police publicly humiliated a mentally disabled man who had no idea what he was doing, the man’s attorney said Monday as his client pleaded not guilty to charges from the televised Internet sex sting.

Robert Accomando, 20, cringed and hid his face Monday as he entered a Riverhead courtroom where he pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted dissemination of indecent material to a minor. He was released on $10,000 cash bail.

Accomando was one of 11 men arrested in an April 20 undercover sting that enlisted the help of Miss America 2007, Lauren Nelson.

After arranging a meeting with an undercover detective posing as a child, Accomando rode his bicycle to the Bay Shore “sting house” and was greeted by Nelson, who was made up to look younger than her 20 years. Nelson led Accomando into the house, where he was met by show host John Walsh and Suffolk police.
