Miss World choice gets nod in great tiara tiff

THE Miss World organisation has endorsed Australia's representative, Sabrina Houssami, although fellow contestants are angry over her selection.

The 20-year-old, who was runner-up to Dennae Brunow last year, was crowned Miss World Australia when the chairwoman, Pauline McFetridge, cancelled this year's local pageants. "I am sure that whatever [Ms McFetridge] has done, it was with the best intentions," a Miss World spokeswoman said.

Ms McFetridge said there was insufficient time to reorganise state and national finals this year. Ms Houssami had continued to campaign for six months after last year's one-vote loss, working on the mandatory fund-raising and talent performance aspects of the contest, and was the automatic choice.

The reigning Miss World Australia, Queensland, Nicole Dixon, supported Ms Houssami but expressed disappointment over the process: "If a national competition was held, would she have been the first choice? With a number of new women, I don't expect that would be the case."

A rival, Tanya Rose, and one of last year's contestants, Renee Offner, called the selection unfair.

Ms Houssami said she was aware "a lot of people aren't happy - they have not been handed the opportunities I have had".
