Jul. 21, 2006 12:00 AM From the first moment we laid eyes on Nicole Falsone, 28, we were totally mesmerized. Not only is Ms. United States one of the most beautiful people we have ever met, she could be one of the most inspiring.

The Scottsdale resident works full-time as an ophthalmic assistant and volunteers constantly. Meanwhile, she's planning her wedding and is up to her ears in finishing up her year as Ms. United States 2005-2006.

Falsone became the first Ms. Arizona to win the national title when she was crowned last year, and she passes the tiara to the new winner this weekend in Las Vegas. Unlike her competitors, Falsone hasn't been a pageant girl for all time. Her start was more unconventional; she was motivated by a cause, and not a crown.

Falsone's best friend was in a serious car accident, and the trauma induced rheumatoid arthritis in her friend, just 23, leaving her in unbearable pain.

"That's the thing," Falsone says. "This disease is not age-discriminate. It can hit anyone."

Frustrated with the lack of information on the disease, Falsone turned to pageants as a platform to raise awareness and establish a national campaign. She now serves as a spokeswoman for the Southwest Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, where she is also on the board of directors. During her year as Ms. United States, Falsone has organized activities that have raised more than $1 million.
