Arthur, North Dakota Celebration Parade

Saturday, July 14, 2007

On Saturday, July 14, the city of Arthur, North Dakota celebrated 125 years of glorious history!

Jo-Anna was invited to participate in Arthur's 125th Celebration Parade and help "CELEBRATE OUR SMALL WITH A BIG HEART - 1882 to 2007" festivities motto.

Jo-Anna and Beauties of America were Entry #35 of well over 200 parade entries!
Following behind Jo-Anna's car were these two friendly, gentle horses and their beautiful riders. The horses were so excited about the festivities that one even wore the city's name proudly on its neck! The parade was very well attended, with people lining the parade route all the way along. Many, many children ran up to Jo-Anna's car, actually stopping the car at times, to "get a picture" (autograph card) and this had Jo-Anna smiling from ear to ear!
Special thanks to the citizens of Arthur (approximately 500) and especially to Tina Davis of
Tina's Magic Sheerz, for the hospitality extended to Jo-Anna and BOA over this delightful celebration weekend (July 13 to July 15).

Go Daddy, Miss America & Congress Find Ways to Protect Our Kids Online

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.-(Business Wire)-July 25, 2007 - Miss America, the president and CEO of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, a well-known researcher of crimes against children, and a top GoDaddy.com executive were among the key figures who testified today before Congress about how to protect our kids from online predators. The business of child pornography over the Internet is estimated to be worth as much as $20 billion.

Go Daddy's testimony explained the role of domain name registrars and Web site hosting providers in the fight against child pornography. Go Daddy has investigated thousands of allegations of child pornography and inappropriate child modeling sites linked to porn. Go Daddy often shuts down these Web sites for violating the "no unlawful conduct or improper use" clause in the service terms customers agree to sign.

Miss America calls for mandatory internet safety classes

Tells Congress she looked at dirty photos

Published Tuesday 24th July 2007 23:37 GMT

The current Miss America has asked Congress to take further steps in protecting children from internet predators.

Lauren Nelson, who received her country's highest honor for looking classy in a swimsuit, told the Senate Commerce Committee that internet safety classes should be mandatory for school children.

"We don't allow our children to ride their bikes without first teaching them about proper safety, and we shouldn't let them use the computer and access the internet without taking the same precautions," Nelson said.

Since winning the Miss America beauty pageant, Nelson, age 20, has used the platform to discourage those wishing to objectify youngsters in a sexual fashion. She told Congress the subject personally touched her life seven years ago when somebody sent her dirty pictures over the internet.

When she was 13 years old, she and a friend were approached by a stranger on an internet chat room. The mystery chatter somehow compelled Nelson — who would go on to get a master's degree in musical theater — to divulge her name, age, gender and home address, as well as that of her friend's.

A few days later, the stranger sent her dirty photos.

Amorous males beware

Minding a celebrity brings with it its own share of glamour, especially if the bodyguard is a disarmingly tough woman.

IN NOVEMBER last year, during a food festival in Chiang Mai, a drunken Thai man approached Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova. The youth shook her hand and tried to kiss it.

Enter the bodyguard. Instantly, Noppawan Pookkesorn, who was standing behind Glebova, delivered a karate chop to disengage the amorous man’s grip on her client.

“The man froze and realised that what he did was not good,” recalled Noppawan.

Later, Glebova thanked her bodyguard.

It was all in a day’s work for the 34-year-old Thai woman who has been responsible for Glebova’s personal safety since the 26-year-old Canadian made Thailand her home in August 2006.

It is rare for the bodyguard to karate chop overzealous fans of the beauty queen, who won the hearts of Thais during the Miss Universe 2005 pageant in Bangkok when she greeted the audience with a wai (a respectful Thai greeting). Most of the time, Noppawan’s task is to politely tell Glebova’s fans not to be too obtrusive.

Miss America to Sing National Anthem at ArenaBowl XXI

NEW ORLEANS - Miss America 2007 LAUREN NELSON will sing the National Anthem at ArenaBowl XXI New Orleans, the AFL announced today. ArenaBowl XXI will be played at New Orleans Arena on Sunday, July 29 at 2 p.m. CT. It will be the first team championship in New Orleans since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Nelson is a Goodwill Ambassador for Children's Miracle Network. In January, the Miss America Organization chose it as its first-ever national platform. The children's charity, which raises money for kids in children's hospitals throughout North America, also became a partner of the AFL last year making the inclusion of Miss America at ArenaBowl XXI New Orleans a perfect union.

"It is a privilege for me to be in New Orleans and to perform at this wonderful spectator sporting event where I am proud to represent the Miss America Organization and Children's Miracle Network," Nelson stated. "Together with the AFL, we are helping to make miracles happen for so many wonderful children across this great country."

"I am thrilled that AFL fans will be treated to pregame pageantry that will include a performer of such iconic status as Miss America," said Commissioner DAVID BAKER. "Working with the Miss American Organization and the Children's Miracle Network was a natural fit for the AFL because all groups believe in taking an active role in shaping America's youth."

Nelson will also make an appearance at the ADT ArenaBall Awards Gala on Friday, July 27 at The Sugar Mill beginning at 6 p.m. CT.

Miss Washington 'a great role model'

By ADRIANA JANOVICH
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

LIZ MARTIN/Yakima Herald-Republic

Elyse Umemoto holds out her Miss Washington crown for Alexis Lakey, 6, to hold during her visit to the Yakima YWCA on Saturday.

Elyse Umemoto -- poised, confident, sparkling -- warns you up front.

"I'm very chatty," she says, almost as soon as she sits down.

She's also quick to laugh and even quicker to smile. And busy. Extremely busy.

She's spent the last couple of weeks having her hair cut and colors done, giving radio and newspaper interviews, and making public appearances, including a celebration of the opening of the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge last Monday and greeting local media at the Yakima YWCA on Saturday morning.

Life has been hectic for the 23-year-old Wapato native since being crowned Miss Washington 2007 -- and winning a $10,000 scholarship -- July 7 at Pantages Theater in Tacoma. And it's sure to get busier.

15 Minutes: Miss North Dakota speaks -- Bring it on, Michigan

7/23/2007 1:54:05 PM

By Christina Killion Valdez

Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

The first time Annette Olson, 24, competed for Miss North Dakota she finished first runner up. That glimpse of the crown enticed her to compete again the following year. This time she won.

Olson spent the last year traveling the state doing talks for the "Eat Smart and Play Hard" campaign.

After passing on the tiara in June, she moved to Rochester, where she spreads a similar message as a public health educator for Olmsted County. Although now, "I've hung up my heels," she said.

But she's still got her riding boots.

Having grown up on a cattle ranch outside of Wilton, N.D., Olson said she brought her horse with her "of course."

The Miss-tery tour

Miss York Naomi Smith, left, and Miss England Georgia Horsley, who are to tour York on an open-top bus
Miss York Naomi Smith, left, and Miss England Georgia Horsley, who are to tour York on an open-top bus

MISS ENGLAND will be sharing her recent victory in the competition with the people of York - when she tours the city centre on an open top bus.

Georgia Horsley, 20, of Norton, who was crowned Miss England last month, will be winding her way through the streets of York on the double-decker bus on Sunday, along with runner-up in the competition and current Miss York, Naomi Smith, 19, of Copmanthorpe.

The bus tour - which will depart from Exhibition Square at about 6pm, and finish back at the square at about 6.45pm - is to welcome Miss England home, after she triumphed against 91 competitors at the three- day competition in Leicester.

The tour promises to be a fine spectacle for residents and visitors alike. There will also be some of the other finalists of the Miss York competition on the bus.

Georgia, who was keen to make time in her hectic schedule to celebrate with the people of York, said: "I'm very much looking forward to the tour. I can't wait! I'm very excited - it will be brilliant. It will be a nice opportunity for us to share our success with the people of York.

"I'm very glad that Naomi will be there to share in it. I haven't seen her since the competition, so it will be nice to see her again and have a good catch up."

Georgia, who won Miss York in 2005, a competition backed by The Press, said her being Miss England - a status that will involve her being an ambassador for York all over the world - had still not sunk in.

"I'm still on cloud nine. It's fantastic," she said.

Pitrolo up for Miss Teen International

Marion native travels to Chicago Monday to compete

By Mary Wade Burnside
Times West Virginian
FAIRMONT Before the Miss West Virginia International pageant, the only beauty contest that Elise Pitrolo ever participated in was for the West Virginia Three Rivers Festival.

Now the Mannington native lives in Charleston, and after a chance meeting last summer with a pageant judge, the 15-year-old was asked to enter.

After a few interviews, Pitrolo was chosen as the state’s representative to Miss Teen International, an offshoot of the Miss International contest that was created in 1960 in Long Beach, Calif., after the Miss Universe left that area and moved to Florida.

On Monday, Pitrolo, the daughter of Jim Pitrolo, Gov. Joe Manchin’s legislative director, and Patty Pitrolo, will travel to Chicago to participate in Miss Teen International 2007.

The pageant will be held Thursday and Saturday at the Northshore Center for the Performing Arts in conjunction with the Miss International 2007 pageant.

“I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for her to get to meet a lot of young women from around the world,” said Patty Pitrolo. “Being international, it’s not only for states — there are contestants from around the world. I think it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance for a young woman.”

Our Jen's in the Pink

JENNIFER Hawkins has been offered a dream job in a Hollywood film. The former Miss Universe has won a sought-after part in the next Pink Panther movie, starring opposite Steve Martin.

Hawkins was originally offered the lead female role, but her demanding modelling and television commitments left her with no choice but to turn down the plum part.

Her management team is now trying to juggle herhectic work schedule so she can take a smaller role in the big-budget film.

"Its incredible,'' Hawkins told The Sunday Telegraph from Ibiza, where she is filming a segment for the Channel Seven travel show, The Great Outdoors.

"I'm so excited and even though I'm not going to be able to accept the main role they've offered, I hope thatwe can still find time in November and December to take a smaller role.''

The yet-to-be-titled Pink Panther film will go into production on August 20 and run through until December.

To be directed by Harald Zwart, the production willbe based in Paris for two months before moving to Boston in the US for the remaining three months.

Steve Martin will reprise his role as Jacques Clouseau, with the bumbling inspector teaming up with a squad of European detectives who are just as incompetent as him.

And that's just my first day!

Ashley Pavletich, Mrs. New Mexico International 2007, won the Mrs. Photogenic award last night, but all the spectators were the winners. The ladies were gorgeous and the production was top notch with a number of show stopping musical numbers and an energetic opening number featuring Chicago's own Blues Brothers (or a reasonable facsimilie thereof)!

It was a great time and I can't wait to keep it going!

Thanks from Miss Illinois

To the Editor:

I want to thank all of my Southern Illinois family and friends for their loving support and making my trip to the Miss Illinois Scholarship Pageant a wonderful experience. All of the cards, letters and phone calls are very much appreciated. A special thanks to my friends and staff at Stone Creek Golf Club for making my welcome home party so special on such short notice. I will always remember the extra efforts put forth to make that happen.

I want to thank my home town of Anna for declaring July 6 as Ashley Hatfield Day and also thank the area businesses for the banners and signs of congratulations. The local newspaper and television stations did a great job.

I can never repay those who helped me prepare for my trip to Miss Illinois. I didn't get there alone. Many hours were devoted to my talent, interview and paperwork preparation. The Miss America Organization is made up of many people on the local, state and national levels who volunteer their time and efforts. We still have much work in preparation for the Miss America Pageant in January.

As Miss Illinois 2007, I hope to represent the entire state of Illinois in an honorable and professional way. Please follow me throughout the year by visiting www.missillinois.org. This site will show you to see where I am traveling and view pictures of some of my engagements. What an honor it is to represent the great State of Illinois.

My heartfelt thanks!

Ashley Hatfield, Anna

Elisabeth Baldanza, Miss Empire Rose, was crowned Miss New York at the Dix Hills Center for the Performing Arts in Huntington late Saturday. In a long black gown with a jeweled bodice, she kneeled as Miss New York 2006, Bethlene Pancoast, affixed her crown.

After crossing the stage for the first time, the Queen of the Empire State, a 23-year-old graduate of Mercy Hurst College, escaped to white Rolls Royce parked out front."I am shocked and very excited," said Baldanza, of Oneonta.

In a packed house, the top 10 contestant paced across the stage in neon bikinis before competing in the talent portion of the show. There was opera and show tunes, belly dancing and ballet set to Bon Jovi.Baldanza was the first Miss New York crowned on Long Island. The competition moved to Huntington after almost three decades in upstate Watertown.

Twenty-two hopefuls vied for the tiara.Baldanza nabbed a $6,500 scholarship and scores of swag -- including a mink coat, a $2,100 diamond necklace, free hair salon services for a year and, of course, a sparkling rhinestone crown.

HOWELL — Among the many lessons learned over the past three weeks, Amy Polumbo said she has experienced firsthand how the Internet can be damaging for not only children but also for adults.

"There are people out there who want to destroy you," the 22-year-old said. "It's a scary place if you don't use it properly."

Now entering her senior year at Wagner College on Staten Island, the theater major was crowned Miss New Jersey on June 16. But 10 days later, a letter and packet of photographs containing copies of pictures she had posted on her private Facebook.com page would become a source of contention.

Blackmailers threatened to make the pictures public if Polumbo did not relinquish the crown that qualified her to compete in the Miss America pageant. Copies were sent to Miss New Jersey officials as well as Miss America pageant officials.

"I've dealt with obstacles in my life, but this was one that I had to face in the public eye," Polumbo said.
