Elyse Umemoto holds out her Miss Washington crown for Alexis Lakey, 6, to hold during her visit to the Yakima YWCA on Saturday.

Elyse Umemoto -- poised, confident, sparkling -- warns you up front.

"I'm very chatty," she says, almost as soon as she sits down.

She's also quick to laugh and even quicker to smile. And busy. Extremely busy.

She's spent the last couple of weeks having her hair cut and colors done, giving radio and newspaper interviews, and making public appearances, including a celebration of the opening of the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge last Monday and greeting local media at the Yakima YWCA on Saturday morning.

Life has been hectic for the 23-year-old Wapato native since being crowned Miss Washington 2007 -- and winning a $10,000 scholarship -- July 7 at Pantages Theater in Tacoma. And it's sure to get busier.
