Elisabeth Baldanza, Miss Empire Rose, was crowned Miss New York at the Dix Hills Center for the Performing Arts in Huntington late Saturday. In a long black gown with a jeweled bodice, she kneeled as Miss New York 2006, Bethlene Pancoast, affixed her crown.

After crossing the stage for the first time, the Queen of the Empire State, a 23-year-old graduate of Mercy Hurst College, escaped to white Rolls Royce parked out front."I am shocked and very excited," said Baldanza, of Oneonta.

In a packed house, the top 10 contestant paced across the stage in neon bikinis before competing in the talent portion of the show. There was opera and show tunes, belly dancing and ballet set to Bon Jovi.Baldanza was the first Miss New York crowned on Long Island. The competition moved to Huntington after almost three decades in upstate Watertown.

Twenty-two hopefuls vied for the tiara.Baldanza nabbed a $6,500 scholarship and scores of swag -- including a mink coat, a $2,100 diamond necklace, free hair salon services for a year and, of course, a sparkling rhinestone crown.
