Ms. Wheelchair North Carolina looks for its own image

Pageants don't always have to mean makeup, baton-twirling and world-peace declarations.

Perhaps they do if you're the mom of an oh-so-precious 6 year old with a big-hair complex. Or if you're one of the few people left who look forward to watching the Miss America pageant, which bounced from network TV to cable and is looking for a successor to Country Music Television.

But within this hostile-to-sequins environment operates another type of pageant, one in which the beauty of the contestants is a nonissue. The competition involves only a couple of private interview sessions, and then one question to be answered in front of an audience, made up mostly of family and friends.

The rules for eligibility are simple: The female contestants must be between the ages of 21 and 60. Each must be a U.S. citizen. And each must depend on a wheelchair for 100 percent of her mobility.
