Miss Virginia Shaves Her Head To Fight Kids’ Cancer Miss Virginia Shaves Her Head To Fight Kids Cancer

clipped from blogs.babble.com

Miss Virginia Shaves Her Head To Fight Kids CancerIn January, she took to the stage in a black bikini to compete for the Miss America crown. This week, Miss Virginia 2008 Tara Wheeler sat down to shave her hair off to help fight kid’s cancer.

Miss Virginia Shaves Her Head To Fight Kids Cancer

Beauty pageants are never going to get me out there shaking my pom poms, but is it any surprise that the beauty queen willing to shave her shoulder-length hair has been bucking the traditional girly girl trend all along?

shaved tara wheeler 300x226 Miss Virginia Shaves Her Head To Fight Kids Cancer

In a society where hair is a defining feminine characteristic intertwined with our beauty ideals, I’m going to wager this is an even bigger stereotype buster. And dare I say a better example for little girls?

Let’s start ticking them off, shall we? Beauty comes from within. Check. Give back. Check. It’s just hair. Check. Should we keep going?

Watch it all go down (note the braiding of her hair - the braids were saved to donate to another organization that makes wigs for kids who have lost their hair):

'The Amazing Race': Show off to another rousing start, this time with UCF's Miss America -- and here are 'Amazing Race' pit stops

Sunday's
exciting premiere suggests that an eighth prize wouldn't be a surprise.
"The Amazing Race" is simply television's best reality contest, even if it doesn't have the ratings to match "American Idol" or "Dancing With the Stars."

Fans of Ericka Dunlap, the Miss America who graduated from the University of Central Florida, will see a lot of her with her husband, Brian Kleinschmidt.  (They are pictured.)

There's a nasty surprise at the starting line, a highly entertaining stop at a Japanese game show in Tokyo and a gripping race through flooded streets in Vietnam.

And -- spoiler alert -- here are the pit stops this season:

2. Cai Be, Vietnam

3. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

4. Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Miss Universe back home to celebrate win, says Venezuela aiming for third consecutive crown

clipped from blog.taragana.com

CARACAS, Venezuela — The newly crowned Miss Universe returned to her native Venezuela on Saturday to celebrate her historic selection, saying the nation would go for its third consecutive win at next year’s pageant.

Stefania Fernandez, 18, was welcomed at the airport with a red carpet and flowers.

“Nothing is impossible, Venezuela!” she said, stepping off the plane in a blue dress and sparkling crown.

Asked what she would say to Colombian rocker Juanes regarding his controversial “Peace Without Borders” concert in Havana on Sunday, Fernandez said she believes that musicians, like beauty queens, “are always here to unite, not to create one more problem in the world.”

Sunday’s concert has drawn criticism in the Cuban-American exile community, where many complain Juanes is endorsing the island’s communist system. Organizers insist the show has no ideological overtones.

Watch Drop Dead Diva this Sunday at 9 pm EST!

Be sure to tune in this Sunday, September 27th to Lifetime TV at 9:00 p.m. EST for episode 11 of Drop Dead Diva! I'm so excited to be an extra in this episode, you may spot me in the hip and trendy night club scene as a "club-goer" wearing a pink halter top! So who knows if you'll see me, but look for the girl in the hot pink top, that will be me! :0) It may be kind of like Where's Waldo...I met some really great people and we all had a lot of fun on set filming this episode in Atlanta.

Drop Dead Diva is such a cute show, it's a spirited new comedic drama series that puts a wildly unique and entertaining spin on the complex issues of a woman's identity in today's world.

James Taylor + Oregon=FABULOUS!!!

My best friend Kathy Shepherd and I, along with our husbands, are huge James Taylor fans.  So when she called to tell me she had purchased James Taylor concert tickets for my wedding anniversary, I was speechless.
The encore left everyone smiling and cheering as the act concluded for the night.  The evening was nothing short of spectacular!

Taylor ended the concert reminding those who had been drinking (and there were plenty) to find a ride home, and "don't drink and drive."  The alcohol and drug prevention, treatment and recovery professional in me wanted to jump up and thank him, yet again!

Miss Michigan USA 2010 to be crowned this weekend at pageant in Port Huron

clipped from www.mlive.com

Love them or hate them, beauty pageants are just as much a part of American culture as football players and Homecoming queens. Every year, countless pageants take place at the city, county and state levels before culminating in the two major national competitions -- Miss USA and Miss America.

This weekend, 41 young women from all over Michigan will gather at the McMorran Place Theater in Port Huron to compete for the title of Miss Michigan USA 2010 and represent Michigan in the 2010 Miss USA pageant next spring.

Miss USA and Miss America have been rival pageants since the 1950s, but the only real difference between the two is that Miss America includes a talent portion and Miss USA does not.

Miss America the New Face of Bioplastic Bottles

clipped from earth911.com

The Miss America Organization is partnering with Nature’s Bottles™ to promote the benefits of plastic bottles made from polylactic acid (PLA), which is generated using corn instead of petroleum.

Miss America will be the international “Go Green” spokesperson for Nature’s Bottles under the campaign slogan “Green is Gorgeous.”

The bottles are manufactured as a bioplastic, which creates a different resin than the polyethylene terephthalate (PETE) typically used to produce petroleum-based water bottles.

This means they cannot be recycled with other PETE bottles, but PLA bottles are biodegradable and can be industrially composted.

Even Miss Venezuela can't escape economic crisis

clipped from www.ibtimes.co.in

Despite a second consecutive victory at this year's Miss Universe, even Venezuela's hugely successful beauty factory is feeling the global pinch.

Miss Venezuela 2009 Stefania

The local "Miss Venezuela" organization -- which has landed the South American nation more international pageant titles than any other country -- announced on Wednesday it had slashed the number of national competitors to 20 from 30.

"We have had to tighten our belt a bit too," said Joaquin Riviera, organizer of the annual Miss Venezuela competition, which is wildly popular and draws huge TV audiences.

The next national winner will be chosen on September 24.

"I've asked Osmel to be a bit stricter choosing 20 girls, so we only have the best," Riviera added, referring to local beauty "czar" Osmel Sousa, who prepares the competitors.

Venezuela's Stefania Fernandez, an 18-year-old brunette, won the Miss Universe 2009 title last month in the Bahamas, giving her country its second win in a row and its sixth in that pageant's history.

Hello Friends!

I can hardly believe that summer is over and autumn begins in just a few days and I have already started to see the changes. I had an amazing summer and have met so many truly wonderful people as I have traveled across the country.

From Kentucky I drove to Indianapolis to participate in the Red Bull MotoCross Grand Prix. At the preliminary races, I had the honor of presenting trophies to winners of the 125cc race and the 250cc race. After the preliminaries, I performed the National Anthem out on the track! It was so exhilarating to be in front of all those people! After the race, I presented the trophy to the 3rd place winner. While at the Moto GP, I also participated in an interview with the Speed Channel. You can see pictures from that interview here: http://www.speedtv.com/gallery/view/1023802/313436 . I really enjoyed watching the motorcycle races because it’s a completely different experience than car races and people travel from all over the world to see them!

I want to first start out by thanking you all for being so supportive and encouraging, for all of your donations, and for continuing to spread the word about the St. Baldrick's Foundation as we fight to end childhood cancer. I've definitely been getting nervous about my big haircut but a few days ago I got an e-mail from the family of a little girl named Jessi who is battling cancer and was feeling down about losing her hair. When I told her not to worry, that "I'd be bald soon too and only the coolest kids are bald!", her family said it made her day!

WHERE: The Crystal City Sports Pub in Arlington, VA
WHAT: Myself (Miss VA 2008 and Redskins Fan Reporter for Comcast SportsNet), Devon McTavish (DC United Soccer Player), and maybe a couple of surprises (!!!) will be shaving our heads to raise money for pediatric cancer research with the St. Baldrick's Foundation!

America's 20s Models for Johnathan Kayne Fashion Show

It has been a busy weekend as America's 20s. Yesterday I was a volunteer for the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure. Today, I appeared at the Cleveland Women's Show where I was a guest model for the Johnathan Kayne Fashion Show. The Cleveland Women's Show was held at the IX Center. I have a couture gown that Kayne designed for me so I was asked to model it along with my Kayne shoes! His gown is one of my favorites! Johnathan Kayne was a finalist for Project Runway and most recently his debut show, "Gown Crazy" can been seen on TLC. After the fashion show, I was able to try on some new designs and fall in love, I have such a weakness for gowns! It was great to see Kayne once again and also to speak with Mrs. Ohio United States and the models. It was an extremely fun day!
Until next time...

And now I am home...back to Illinois!

So congratulations to Andrea Robertson, our new Mrs. America, who I am sure will do great things with her year, and great things at Mrs. World. It is an honor to know you and to have competed with you. To the ladies of the Class of 2009…I have great memories, good stories, and have some incredible examples of class, ingenuity, grace, style, and beauty because of you. I applaud each and every one of you and thank you all for what you have given me in this experience.
This time at Mrs. America would not have meant as much as it did had it not been for some people I’d like to mention. The road to Mrs. America is long and difficult, sometimes it even looks impossible. I went and I feel I did my very best, but I did not go alone, and for that I am grateful.
When people see Mrs. America or Mrs. State in action, I hope they see that it’s not about saving the world; it’s about serving your corner of it. Anyone can do it, but you have to make the choice to do it.

Saying Thank You to Donors

Yesterday was a magnificent day! When we are passionate about a cause we devote time, energy and love to it tirelessly. My passion to encourage others to donate has been unwavering and I was given the distinct blessing to say thank you to those who take the time to donate.
The day before the interview, I had another visit with my hematologist - it has been a difficult few weeks and plagued with several issues, we have begun a new path of treatment to include higher dosages of iron and another transfusion. Finding the proper combination of medicine has been slightly perplexing as the side-effects can sometimes outweigh the benefits.

Miss International increasing disability awareness

clipped from abclocal.go.com

Beauty pageants are not just about looks. But some like the International Pageants are based on accomplishments. This is why a profoundly deaf candidate was crowned Miss International.

Even though Jayna Altman's reign as Miss International 2008 ended several weeks ago, her commitment to increasing disability awareness will never end.

"My platform is, I can inspire confidence in your abilities now with the focus that we're all born differently, we all have different types of strengths and weaknesses, and in those weaknesses, rather than labeling it as disability, it's just a different type of ability," Altman said.

Altman said this not only has been a phenomenal experience for her, it gave her an opportunity a share her life mission.

We had practice time in the morning and then spent the afternoon working for Habitat for Humanity, planting trees and bushes for a new location of homes. I have to brag on Mrs. Alaska because we got 2 trees planted ourselves, then tackled a third with Mrs. Utah and Mrs. Arizona who happened upon the biggest tree and the smallest place to plant. Gotta give 'em props for having big aspirations! Erika set to creating a new, larger hole to plant and made a perfect place for everyone to get it together. There's a reason why she has some awesome arm/shoulder muscles!
Group after planting - I like this one because it does not show the front of me covered in mud!!! I'm in the black shirt and jeans - PS, thanks Kansas, for being concerned about my well-being and heat exposure! SO Sweet!

First Ever Building Inner Beauty Pageant!

I have been working with Isabel's Community Outreach Center in Plano, and was thrilled when Crissy (Isabel's daughter) started her own project in helping young girls and women of the center develop skills in self-confidence that will help bring what is on the inside and let it shine through on the outside. Miss Dallas International Kelli Ansley and I helped the ladies by each heading up a topic and teaching them. My group learned about how to get up in front of a group/audience and public speak. I also briefly went over making friends and setting goals. Kelli's group went over skin care and healthy habits. In the end there was a pageant, so that the girls could get a feel for the stage and each contestant cast their ballot on who they thought should win (the girl who showed the most inner beauty) and one winner was chosen! The dinner honored the many different cultures that Dallas has to offer, considering that our city consists of 40% first and second generation immigrants. The night started out with a flag ceremony, next there were dishes served from many different cultural cuisines, and speeches from all the honorable mayors about where North Texas is headed. A great night that had so many colorful costumes to add to the festivities of the evening!

In addition to criticism from their own colleagues, who have questioned the election process, now more people signed a letter demanding that descorone Stefania Fernandez, considering that the contest was rigged.

The letter was sent by Paula Shigart, president of the organization
Miss Universe, and requests for clarification of the real interests that move behind the election and gets her stripped of her crown to Fernandez.
"We totally disagree with the recent election and consider it unfair, flawed and unjustified. Do not want to speculate that there are special interests and business between his organization

True or false, legitimate doubts about the triumph of Stefania Fernandez as Miss Universe has not ceased, thus sowing uncertainty among supporters of the competition.

Official Day 1

Day 1 was orientation and then orientation dinner...easy enough! :) My poor roommate arrived terribly sick, so I think we were both glad for the extra day to sleep in and leisurely check in and get ready. I took in a day in the gym and enjoyed the view of the mountains I remember Julie Rinehart telling me about 4 years ago. Being there was so surreal, but every time I would see something she had told me about and reminisced during her time in Tucson, I would think of her and smile, knowing that there had been a time when I'd wanted to be at Mrs. America myself and thinking it would never, ever happen. After some gym time, I cleaned up, checked in, then got ready for a beautiful dinner in a gorgeous ballroom, with even more gorgeous women. And I remember looking at dessert thinking to myself, "WHAT?!?! I have swimsuit competition!!!" Looking back, I should have enjoyed that little treat a bit more because I lost some serious weight by the time prelims came around.

Mrs. America, Here We Come!

I will open with saying that this was an incredible experience, made incredible by 50 women that each could have easily taken home the crown themselves. I would not have wanted to be a judge this year; as I got to know a different lady, I would think "She would definitely be a great Mrs. America!" Guess that's why they each won their state! I am impressed, awed, honored and grateful to have been counted among the Class of 2009.
I left for Tucson the day before orientation to get unpacked and acclimated before everything began, as I was warned there's not much "down time"...SO true!

A DREAM COME TRUE!

Wow! This is my first week back home in Boston, Massachusetts —as Ms. America 2009-10!!  While I’m not sure it’s fully sunk in just yet, I have to say that being crowned this weekend was truly THE highest point in my life!  And—judging by the way my family reacted—probably one of their greatest moments too! I’m honored to have been chosen to represent the Ms. America organization as it follows my same passion of empowering and inspiring women to achieve their best. And I know that I’ll be able to foster that goal, since I'm a life-long advocate for inspiring others to be their very best and being a role model to others by leading by example!!

Before I made it as a finalist, I had some great help: my pageant coach Elizabeth McGlynn of the Professional Pageant Preparation, LLC helped get me up to speed on all things pageantry, Stewart Smith Photography did a fantastic job on my headshots and my evening gown was a beautiful, handmade version inspired by the latest trends.

America's 50s Story Selected for MORE Magazine's Reinventors Hall of Fame

It started in May 2009 with an email from MORE Magazine asking subscribers to write in to the publication with stories about how they reinvented themselves after age 40.  Taking the bait I wrote my story about competing in a pageant after age 50, certain it would fall into the email reply abyss.

To my complete amazement, they posted my story on their online version of the magazine!  Then I received a message from the magazine's editor-in-chief asking me if I would be willing to go the New York City for a  photo shoot.  Immediately after winning the Beauties of America Pageant, I headed to the Big Apple for an experience of a lifetime!

Checking in with Courtney Cox -Miss Teen South Carolina International

clipped from mncips.blogspot.com
Courtney began her freshman year at Clemson University three weeks after returning from the Miss Teen International pageant. During her time at Clemson she has become a true tiger. After camping out for football tickets and donning her orange clothes for "Solid Orange Friday", Courtney really feels like a part of the Clemson family. She is a part of CBE, the Clemson Business Experience, which is a group of freshman who are all pre-business majors who live together in their dorm, Benet Hall. This group does community service, business tours, and prepares them for their time in the Clemson Business school. She is still getting used to dorm life, and really misses home, but living only forty miles away isn't a bad trip for her to make every weekend. Courtney will be turning 19 soon, on September 13th, and is celebrating in Greenville with her family and friends.

My platform is The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I chose this platform, because after doing many charity events, I realized that they all benefited this organization. My parents started a charity volleyball tornament that raised money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Also, the Bertrand Berry Foundation, and Light the Night are two big charities I am involved in, that also benfit the same organization. I felt that after helping The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through other charities, I was excited to work with them directly to become more involved while continuing to help other charities. After winning, and meeting with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, I was named an ambassador for this organization, and haved dedicated my year to helping them. I have attended many events, and hope to continue more as the year goes on.
Miss Teen Arizona, Megan McMaster!
Hello! My name is Megan McMaster, Miss Teen Arizona United States 2009. I competed in this pageant for one main reason, and that was Breast Cancer. My grandmother was diagnosed a couple years back and has survived through it.. I also had a scare, but luckily nothing was wrong. Being able to send out a message to our younger generation about Breast Cancer, is the best feeling. I cannot even explain to you! Being crowned Miss Teen Arizona, has not only given me the voice I wanted, but the determination, integrity, and compassion for Breast Cancer, as well as so many other charities
Miss Arizona United States, Tiffany Martin
My platform is an organization that I founded. QADD Queens Against Drunk Driving/Destrictive Decisions.
Ms. Arizona United States, Amanda Houdashell!
Hello, my name is Amanda Houdashell and I am Ms. Arizona United States 2009. I am currently in my final semester of my MBA with a Human Resource specialization program with Capella University. Also I work as a Marketing Research Assistant at a marketing company and a bridal model. In my spare time I enjoy reading, traveling the world, and playing with my cats. I currently volunteer with the Commemorative Air Force, both on a national and state level. This organization helps fly and restore World War II aircraft and beyond, and keeps our countries aviation history alive. My platform is Supporting Our Troops. I work mostly with Operation HomeFront Arizona Chapter at raising much needed money and supplies for the troops and their families. This cause is important to me as I come from a military family, and believe that we need to support them as they fight for our freedom.

Miss America's Outstanding Teen Pageant in Orlando, FL

Hello y'all! I feel as if I have picked up an accent from my roommates and a few of the Miss America contestants that I have spent time with this week! What a great five days!
We got the chance to visit Universal Studios, attend all prelims and the final night of competition for Miss America's Outstanding Teen, as well as bond with the other contestants who will be competing in Las Vegas in January for the title of Miss America 2010.  I was lucky enough to room with Miss New Jersey (Ashley), Miss Massachusetts (Amanda) and Miss Kentucky (Mallory).  We had an absolute blast!  And, with four girls sharing one room there was no shortage of dresses, heels, crowns, hair products and fake eyelashes... we had stuff everywhere!!

The new series starring Cy Frakes is set to premiere Sept. 30.

"The series definitely captures the essence of who I am and what I do," Frakes said. Ex-Miss California sues over gay marriage comment

clipped from www.reuters.com

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former Miss California USA Carrie Prejean has sued beauty pageant organizers claiming she was wrongfully fired for saying marriage should be only between a man and a woman, her lawyer said on Monday.

Two months after her controversial statement at the Miss USA pageant in April, organizers fired Prejean saying she broke her contract by failing to make appearances on their behalf.

Prejean's attorney Charles LiMandri said pageant officials based their decision to terminate her contract on invitations Prejean received for events she was never required to attend.

Prejean, 22, made headlines worldwide when she said she believed only men and women should be allowed to wed in reply to a question by a gay celebrity blogger and pageant judge. She subsequently was named first runner-up. In the weeks that followed, she claimed the answer cost her the Miss USA crown.

Breaking Beauty Pageant News: Miss Universe choreographer says Donald Trump chooses finalists

clipped from trueslant.com

Forget Rachel Maddow grilling Tom Ridge.   If you want to see how to really conduct an interview, go to Guanabee.com.  The blog (featuring “Gossip, Pop culture and Media for the Latino in You”) interviewed Miss Universe choreographer Michael Schwandt and he dropped the biggest bombshell since Omarosa announced she was becoming a minister. Sure, they buried the lead but the info is there, quotes and all.

So, he’s orchestrating at least a portion of the results? Right. And, his reason for doing so, as he told me and he’s told the girls before, is that he left it all up to preliminary judging in the past and some of the most beautiful women, in his opinion, were not in the top fifteen and he was kind of upset about that. And he decided that he would pick a certain number and let the judges pick a certain number.

Miss California Seeking Damages

clipped from www.samesame.com.au
www.samesame.com.au

Former Miss California Carrie Prejean is sueing the organisers of the pageant because she believes she was wrongfully dismissed for defending traditional notions of marriage.

In June this year Prejean was stripped of her title over an “unwillingness to make appearances on behalf of the Miss California USA organisation”. A spokesperson for Miss California pageant said that “it [had] become abundantly clear that Carrie [was] unwilling to fulfill her obligations under our contract and work together.”

However Prejean’s attorney Charles LiMandri told Reuters that the decision to fire her wasn’t about contractual arrangements at all.

Miss California came first runner up. On a video blog on his website Perez later said, “She lost not because she doesn’t believe in gay marriage, she lost because she’s a dumb bitch!”
