Former Miss America to speak at symposium

For years, Langston University has held a tradition of placing competent women in important positions. And with the recent inauguration of its first female president, JoAnn Haysbert, a greater incentive came for LU to build upon that strong heritage through the Women In Leadership Symposium.

Now an annual event and in its second year, the symposium is focusing on the empowerment of women in the workplace and in society. This year's theme is "Empowering Ourselves."

"We as women must empower ourselves," says Carolyn Kornegay, chair of the WIL committee. "No one can do this for us, just like no one can take it from us."

This year's luncheon, which will feature former Miss America Debbye Turner as the guest speaker, will give women an opportunity to learn from each other as well as teach one another. KOCO news anchor Tierney Cook is scheduled to serve as the hostess.

Having Debbye Turner as the guest speaker, as well as other female panelists from all walks of life, will bring a new perspective to the table.
