Talk of a national 3-peat swirls at Miss Oklahoma competition

By Justin Juozapavicius Associated Press Writer

TULSA (AP) — Before they slip on a swimsuit or into an evening gown this week, the 44 contestants in the Miss Oklahoma pageant have already been thinking about the three-peat.

As in, what kind of coup it would be in the pageant universe for the third consecutive Miss Oklahoma winner to go on to take the Miss America crown in January.

Tulsa’s Jennifer Berry did it in 2006. This year, it was Lawton native Lauren Nelson’s turn to wear the tiara. Both won Miss Oklahoma honors the previous years.

And when Nelson became Miss America on Jan. 29, Oklahoma became the first state to produce consecutive winners since Mississippi did it in 1959-1960.

So, could lightning strike three times? After all, the state once produced a commemorative license plate saying, “Oklahoma, Home of Miss America. Land of beautiful girls.”

“It would be the first time in the history of the pageant that it’s been done,” said Miss Oklahoma pageant spokeswoman Susan Finegan. “Can you imagine being the only and the first state in the U.S. to do it?”
