I have never judged a pageant that was entirely in Spanish, but I have also never had so much fun judging a pageant. The audience was so supportive of all the contestants and the pageant director / organization was incredible. Congratulations to all of the winners! Thank you to Dally Rodriguez, the outgoing Mrs. Philadelphia Latina and the current Mrs. Philadelphia PA US 2009, for inviting Susan and I to judge the event.

Mexico Beauty Queen Stripped of Crown in Bolivia After Arrest

LA PAZ -- Mexican beauty queen Laura Zuñiga Huizar, detained in her homeland along with a group of presumed drug traffickers this week, has been stripped of the Miss Hispanoamericana title she won in Bolivia, the press in that Andean nation reported Saturday. The decision was taken Friday by the Bolivia-based Promociones Gloria, which organizes beauty pageants in Bolivia and on Oct. 31 awarded Zuñiga that title in the eastern city of Santa Cruz. Promociones Gloria said the decision to remove the title is a "consequence of events of public knowledge in which Miss Laura Zuñiga has been involved," the daily El Deber de Santa Cruz reported. According to the daily, Tatiana Limpias, manager of Promociones Gloria company, said Zuñiga violated a rule that requires the pageant winner to demonstrate "adequate behavior, avoid scandals and bad habits and be a good example for society."

The competition is branded as an alternative to the stereotypical beauty pageant. Contenders must prove they are more than just a pretty face. And now 21-year-old Jessica Waugh, from Rectory Terrace in Gosforth, Newcastle, is trying to show she has what it takes. Last night Jessica said: “I kind of got involved for a dare and a bit of a laugh really. But the competition is supposed to be like the opposite to a beauty pageant – they say you need more than just a pretty face. “I thought it would be like an investigation to see if that’s true. “I want to prove that women should be judged on their academic achievements and that it’s not just a beauty pageant.”

The Marion Station resident didn't win that competition, but this year, she claimed her sixth title -- Miss Maryland USA. Next month, Carlson, 24, plans to start gown shopping for the 2009 Miss USA pageant, which will be televised live from Las Vegas on NBC this spring. "I love every aspect of it," said Carlson, who will complete an interview portion, model a swimsuit and evening gown and answer an on-stage question during the pageant. "All of the girls are gorgeous, really nice and have very unique personalities -- it's going to be a tough year." Carlson, who made four prior attempts for the Miss Maryland USA title, has always been "driven" to succeed, she said. She aims to overcome challenges in her life.

Schraeder reportedly asked Sheri Nelson to be his "first lady" in June at the Walworth County Diary Breakfast. The complaint says Schraeder "vehemently" volunteered to be in a milk-chugging competition Nelson coordinated and followed her down the street the next day, when she was in a parade in Mukwonago. Schraeder was arrested yesterday and said in court he didn't understand his arrest. He has a prior conviction for violating a restraining order and harrassment. Nelson is a former Walworth County Fairest of the Fair and this year's Wisconsin Fairest of the Fair. The University of Wisconsin-Madison student helps promote Wisconsin's county fairs. According to a criminal complaint, he told her was planning their wedding for a year later.
