SALISBURY -- Nine years ago, Gabrielle Carlson made an ex-boyfriend jealous when she became a contestant in her first pageant.

The Marion Station resident didn't win that competition, but this year, she claimed her sixth title -- Miss Maryland USA.

Next month, Carlson, 24, plans to start gown shopping for the 2009 Miss USA pageant, which will be televised live from Las Vegas on NBC this spring.

"I love every aspect of it," said Carlson, who will complete an interview portion, model a swimsuit and evening gown and answer an on-stage question during the pageant. "All of the girls are gorgeous, really nice and have very unique personalities -- it's going to be a tough year."

Carlson, who made four prior attempts for the Miss Maryland USA title, has always been "driven" to succeed, she said. She aims to overcome challenges in her life.
