If you're packing up the kids, the sunscreen and the picnic baskets to head down to opening day of the Pollock Community Water Park, don't be alarmed when you can't get in the parking lot on Saturday.
A dance event hosted by Richard's School of the Dance at Oshkosh West High School's Alberta Kimball Auditorium has priority, and the school's parking lot will be reserved for its spectators, said Eileen Connolly-Keesler, executive director of the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation.
Water park patrons will instead be hitting the streets in search of parking Saturday.
"It seldom happens," Connolly-Keesler said of conflicting events. "But everyone just needs to be patient and respectful. It's not the best situation, but we're going to pull together as a community and work through it."
Barricades will be up at the entrance to West's parking lot, and a community police officer will be checking for proof of an auditorium ticket to get into the lot, said Oshkosh Recreation Department Director Al Wenig.
"Don't try to get into the lot unless you're really going to the performance," Wenig said. "If you're going to the pool, basically it's going to be street parking."
Wenig said West's auditorium and parking lot would only be reserved one other time this summer, for the Miss Wisconsin Pageant. Otherwise, it's open season for water park patrons.
"As part of the agreement, any auditorium event will preclude any pool parking," Wenig said.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, and the park will remain open until 8 p.m.
