Miss Point Mallard wins second place in Miss Alabama

BIRMINGHAM — Katie Boyd of Pelham, who is Miss Point Mallard, was the runner-up Saturday in the Miss Alabama ageant.

Boyd, 21, who won her Point Mallard title during last July's Spirit of America Festival in Decatur, placed second to winner Melinda Toole as the state pageant concluded at Samford University.

Toole, 22, of Birmingham entered the pageant as Miss Samford University. She will represent the state in the Miss America pageant in January.

The state pageant awarded about $108,000 in scholarships, of which about $7,000 went to Boyd. She won the talent competition Friday night with her ballet performance to "Man of La Mancha."

Others placing in the state pageant were Julia McNeese of Montgomery, Miss Painted Rock, second runner-up; Jessica Headley of Hoover, Miss Center Point, third runner-up; and Alecia Lewis of Auburn, Miss Jefferson County, fourth runner-up.
