11jun06 A GOLD Coast model has beaten off strong competition from two WA beauties to take Australia's Miss Universe crown.
Erin McNaught, 24, was chosen from 19 contestants from around Australia at the gala ceremony in Melbourne on Friday.
Perth beauties Leah Fuhrmann and Edwina Nattrass wowed judges, including sports star Cathy Freeman and fashion designer Wayne Cooper, and were both among the final six contestants.
McNaught, who has featured in men's magazines Ralph and FHM, will head to Los Angeles next month to try to emulate WA's Kerry Anne Wells, Australia's first Miss Universe in 1972, and Jennifer Hawkins, who took the crown in 2004.
Furhmann, a 19-year-old marketing student from Watermans Bay, came third behind Victorian dairy worker Emma Newcombe.
Nattrass, a presenter on Channel 31's breakfast program and the daughter of Perth Lord Mayor Peter Nattrass, led on points for most of the day after impressing judges during gruelling interviews before the final parade.
