Lawton woman crowned as Miss Oklahoma

TULSA, Okla. Lauren Nelson, a 19-year-old University of Central Oklahoma student from Lawton, is crowned as Miss Oklahoma tonight at Oral Roberts University's Mabee Center.

Nelson was competing in her first Miss Oklahoma pageant. She will receive a 16-thousand-dollar scholarship and represent Oklahoma in the upcoming Miss America pageant.She is a sophomore at U-C-O majoring in musical theater and is is the daughter of Mark and Sherrell Nelson of Lawton. She qualified for the pageant as Miss Oklahoma State Fair.The reigning Miss America, Jennifer Berry of Tulsa, won last year's Miss Oklahoma title.During the pageant finals, Nelson sang "What Kind of Fool Am I" during the talent portion of the show. Her platform issue is "Be Net Smart," an effort to protect children who venture online.

Lindsay Miller of Tulsa, Miss Grand Lake, was the first runner-up, winning an 8-thousand-dollar scholarship.
