Local beauty to take on the universe

Friday, June 9.

CORAGULAC could become the centre of Australia's universe tonight thanks to local beauty Emma Newcombe. The 23-year-old blonde bombshell will hit the catwalk for the final of the Miss Universe Australia competition in Melbourne with a prayer in her heart. From a strong Catholic background, Ms Newcombe grew up knowing more about farming than fashion but has impressed judges with her fresh natural look, reminiscent of model Sarah O'Hare. At the suggestion of a talent scout she entered the Geelong tryouts and has gone on to become one of four Victorian finalists and cover girl for the Geelong Advertiser Bride magazine. A panel including socialite Lillian Frank, designer Wayne Cooper and Olympian Cathy Freeman will judge the final 20 contestants on a stage presentation, interview, swimsuit parade and evening wear parade. The Miss Universe Australia winner will have the chance to compete in the world finals in Los Angeles later this year and follow in the glamorous footsteps of 2004 Aussie champ Jennifer Hawkins. ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: Coragulac's Emma Newcombe will compete in tonight's Miss Universe Australia competition where she'll face stiff opposition, including (right) Ella Anderson, Alana Pallister and Georgia Sinclair.
