From PageantFire blog: Queen Haglund hangs with Prince! No not the purple one.
On Friday morning, Miss America and HRH the Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex will be the morning guests on Fox & Friends live from Mississippi to announce the newest initiative for the Miss America Organization, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Young Americans’ Challenge.
Ummm.... Mississippi? The guy comes all the way from a far, far, land to meet our Queen and we picked Mississippi?
They’ll discuss with Gretchen the importance for this award which is for personal achievement and can be obtained by anyone aged 14 to 25. I remember back in school when we had the Presidential fitness award. President Reagan had Arnold Schwarts'hisname as the spokesperson for it. I was pretty good at all the running and stuff, but those pull-ups always got me....

1921 Miss America Today
The Sociology professor was explaining how society's ideals of beauty change with time.
"For example," he said, "take the 1921 Miss America. She stood five foot, one inch tall, weighed 108 pounds and had measurements of 30-25-32. How do you think she'd do in today's version of the contest?"
One student piped up, "Not very well."
"Why is that?" asked the professor.
"For one thing, she'd be way too old!"

Tony Bowls Collection features Miss America’s Outstanding Teen
Tony Bowls, the designer of three of the hottest names in formal wear–LeGala, Paris Prom and Tony Bowls Evenings, debuts the Tony Bowls Pageant Collection in a National Ad Campaign. The campaign, which kicks-off in this month’s edition of Pageantry Magazine, features Caitlin Brunell, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2008.
The parent company of the Tony Bowls Collection, Mon Cheri–a company most well-known for their impeccable bridal line, has burst onto the prom and pageant scene over the past few years. Most of the company’s success is accredited to the designs of Tony Bowls. Bowls has been deemed “Official Gown Designer” for the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen (MAOT) pageant, a competition that is the “little sister” to the Miss America Organization.
“It’s always exciting for me to have the opportunity to influence trends by creating gowns the young ladies of this teen program request and want to wear,” said Tony Bowls. “I embrace their passion of style and fashion and try to convey their excitement through advertising campaigns like Caitlin Brunell’s for the Tony Bowls Collection.”

Christiansburg grandmother tries again for pageant title
By Donna Alvis-Banks
381-1661
CHRISTIANSBURG -- Diane Yopp says she's at that age where her brain says, "Go, go, go!"
But her body says, "Whoa, whoa, whoa!"
"My brain doesn't think I'm 62, but my body tells me I am," she said.
The arthritis in her hands and feet isn't stopping this grandmother of five from giving the Ms. Virginia Senior America Pageant another shot.
"She decided she would do it one more time," said Wendy Pinhey, a former contestant and organizer of this year's pageant. Pinhey said the pageant, for women 60 and older, promotes the message that aging is not something to be feared.

Miss Universe 2009: VN designer working on ao dai for Miss Universe
VN designer working on ao dai for Miss Universe
07:37' 17/05/2008 (GMT+7)
You have signed a contract to be the sole designer of ao dai for Miss Universe pageant. Could you share your happiness with us?
When I was a small boy, each time I watched international pageant contests on TV, I dreamed that one day they would wear my clothes and that dream has become reality. This is the greatest happiness and luck for me in my over 10-year career.
How special will be your designs for the contest?
I will design 85 ao dai for 85 contestants from all over the world. Each design will have its own characteristics and will be different from the others. Each ao dai will be a story, which shows the cultural uniqueness of each country.
I divide them into four collections based on the four seasons – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. When my ao dai go to stage, you will see a colourful picture of nature and a splendid flower garden of Mother Nature.
I want to present to contestants and introduce to international friends a special gift: unique designs that appear for the first time at a Miss Universe pageant. They are my passion, my sentiment and my soul.
But how can you find the essences of all 85 countries within a few months to show them in your designs?
It was very hard for me to get accurate measurements of all contestants from the organising board. I also had to seek information about the colours of their skin, hair and eyes to choose the most suitable materials.
My ao dai will hold closely to the body to help show-off competitors’ body curves. The colours will be various to render the four seasons. I will keep the frame of Vietnamese traditional ao dai and add some suitable renovations. I want to prove that ao dai is not an old thing. It is very modern and romantic.
Learning of the cultures of 85 countries has taken a lot of time. I have to read documents and find out what are the most outstanding features of these countries. I also have to look at traditional clothes of these countries and filter the most special things to use in my ao dai collection, which I call “Miss Universe”. |
