Miss La Crosse more than meets the eye

UW-L student uses pageant to promote deeply personal passion

Many people don't realize how much time and dedication go into beauty pageants. Being a pageant contestant requires much more than a pretty face; it requires hard work and a desire to be heard. Recently crowned Miss La Crosse, UW-L sophomore Raenna Johnson, has what it takes to succeed.
Johnson first became involved with beauty pageants her senior year of high school when she won Miss Holmen 2007. The chance to win scholarships was what pushed her towards being a contestant, and her Miss Holmen win rewarded her with $2,000 in scholarship money.
Johnson also wanted to use pageants as a way to project a message very important to her. About four years ago, her brother Tyler ended his life as the result of a methamphetamine addiction. This tragedy inspired Johnson to speak out on drug use prevention and awareness, which was her platform in the recent Miss La Crosse pageant.

Taking Time For Life's SImplest Pleasures

The day I turned fifty the gift my daughter and son-in-law gave me was the news I was going to be a grandmother.  What a welcome to that golden age which is sometimes dismissed as a hallmark of the best being over.

Instead it was the signal of the infancy of what has proven to be the most incredible time in my life!  My little birthday present (also known as Maddie) continues to bring joy in our lives in ways I could not dream were possible.  Today was one of those days.

At a time in my life where possibilities abound and life is busy, my granddaughter's excitement reminds me we often get so enthralled in our vocations and avocations we sometimes forget to stop for a moment and take in the simplicity and wonderment of a less than two year old child.

When it was time to leave I was reminded of the importance of enjoying the simplest of things in life.  Spending time with Maddie was a moment that I would not have traded for all the flash bulb or client possibilities in the world.

Sterling Reference Labs Welcomes Beauties of America's 50s

One of my goals as the 2009 titleholder for Beauties of America's 50s is to bring much needed attention the issue of alcohol and drug abuse prevention and treatment. A key partner is making this goal a reality is the nationally recognized Sterling Reference Laboratories, of Tacoma, Washington.

Sterling truly has proven to be the gold standard when it comes to lab services for businesses and government agencies that require drug testing to ensure the public's safety in the fields of transportation and healthcare. Their state of the art lab services and testing protocols ensure compliance with federal standards, and assist the addictions treatment field in serving those who are receiving care for their disease.

World Record Thriller! with Mrs. Illinois

There was a reason why we got some serious rain and cold for the BC Walk Saturday Morning, because I needed some help in the "bad hair" department..."Why on earth would you want that?!" you ask? Because Saturday night was the Thrill the World Global Event at Six Flags Great America where we, along with parks, theaters, etc across the world, all perform "Thriller" at the same time in an effort to break the Guinness Book of World Records!
I was asked by Six Flags to teach the choreography and be a part of the event. So Saturday afternoon, scary hair, cobwebs and all, photographer and exceptional friend, Jason Pawlowski, and I were escorted into the deepest parts of Six Flags to be "Zombie-fied". I don't think I have ever seen anything so cool! I got to be made up by the extraordinarily talented team of JPM Productions...WOW!!! That's serious airbrushing, folks!
You can see the dance on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v029Ulbf0II - can you find me in the crowd?!?! :)

Tara said after the pageant: "It may never happen again...I think we made pageant history."

Tara also thinks the fact that they're fraternal twins is what allowed her sister to be crowned.

Beauty pageant wants Prejean breast money back

Carrie Prejean

The Miss California pageant says Carrie Prejean owes money they loaned her for a breast enhancement

Former beauty queen turned icon of the religious right Carrie Prejean is being counter-sued by the organisers of the Miss California pageant that she
won earlier this year. Keith Lewis claims that she still owes them $5,200 which they loaned her to have breast implants.

Prejean shot to fame when she expressed her opposition to gay marriage during the Miss America pageant in April and was championed by Fox News host Sean Hannity and other right-wing groups. She was
subsequently stripped of her state title last June after semi-nude photographs of her were found by the TMZ gossip website, in violation of an agreement she had signed with K2 Productions, the
pageant's organisers.

Carrie Prejean Before and After Breast Implant

We heard all these things about inner and natural beauty at the beauty pageant, but who knows what happened behind the scene? So Carrie Prejean once was been headlines when Carrie Prejean’s Photos in Playboy magazine were out. Now, the production company that runs Miss California beauty pageant iling a cross complaint against Prejean, demanding, among other things, that Carrie return the $5,200 the pageant fronted her for her breast augmentation.

Although now, finding $5,200 might not be as hard for her considering her being offered so much for  several Playboy photo shoot. Playboy seemed to be able to offer $140,000 for Carrie Prejean’s Playboy pictures nude. Is she finally going to accept it to pay for her lawsuit? Let’s wait and see more.

There were also a few adolescent boys who joined her at the table to to decorate crowns...and told her stories about their multiple surgeries. You could well imagine the grins on their faces when they got to all individually take pictures with Kylie in spite of their injuries...and then when the pics were printed and Kylie signed them and gave them to all of the kids they were all so excited.

Portland Go Red Luncheon Proves To Be Nothing Short of Fabulous!

Each year the Greater Portland Go Red For Women luncheon committee dedicates itself to organizing a fantastic, enjoyable fundraising event that is the life blood of the American Heart Association's efforts to educate, advocate and support research for cardiovascular disease.
The luncheon officially was kicked off with KGW news anchor and Go Red Ambassador Brenda Braxton opening the program. In a break from the traditional invited speakers presentations, Portland's beloved actor, singer, author and The Oregonian columnist Margie Boule` facilitated her version of a five minute party.
The results of the day are still being tallied, but at last count nearly $100,000 was raised to continue to fund education, advocacy, and research efforts.  From all angles it was truly a wonderful day had by all (and a great chance to catch up with my baby sister, Sara pictured to my left!).

Miss New Jersey USA contestant continues Milltown family's tradition

MILLTOWN — Courtney Fay's mother, grandmother and great grandmother had competed in beauty pageants, so it was almost like destiny that Courtney should too. But she and her mother, Monica Fay, agreed that school should come first. Still, Courtney Fay always longed to enter a pageant.

photo

“I love dressing up and being a girl, getting to wear beautiful gowns,” said Fay, 20, of Milltown. “And I've always watched beauty pageants. Not only are these girls beautiful, they are smart, elegant and graceful. They're so well-rounded. Yes, it's a beauty pageant, but there's so much more to it. I always thought those girls were so amazing.”

This past summer, Monica Fay, on a whim, decided to send a photograph of her daughter to the Miss New Jersey USA Pageant.

Chicago wrap up by Rachel Roberts, Mrs. Oklahoma 2009

When I won the title of Mrs. Oklahoma International, I had no idea just how much my life would change over the next few months. Part of my duties as a state titleholder included the amazing opportunity to compete for the title of Mrs. International in Chicago. I had no idea what to expect and to be honest, I was nervous. You see, I’m not a typical “beauty queen”. I don’t wear a lot of makeup and dress up with heals on a daily basis. I am much more comfortable in sweats with tennis shoes.
I am so thankful for the amazing experience I had in Chicago and for the new friends I now have in my life! It was an honor to represent Oklahoma!

Pumpkins, Rain, and Donors

Yesterday was an adventure, to say the least! Upon arriving at Battlefield HS, I was among a sea of pumpkins, children's games and vendor booths. The fall weather was drippy yet soon the clouds and rain drops gave way to some chilly sunshine and a strong breeze. (Which, of course, took what was a good hair day to a whole new level!)
There was certainly lots to see and do! Most importantly, the Red Cross Donor Bus was waiting for donations! And of course, many answered the call. I feel blessed to have been a part of the event and to help others register to save lives. How easy is that?!?
Thankfully, instead of being on the bus, I was able to sit inside the high school where a waiting area had been prepared. This space provided an opportunity to share my story of survival and offer a great deal of appreciation for those that donated. It is always humbling to thank those that donate, after all, it's the probably the easiest way to save 2 lives yet so many choose not too.

TLC's 'King of the Crown': Meet beauty pageant expert Cy Frakes

by Tim Stack
clipped from popwatch.ew.com

Tonight TLC debuts its reality series King of the Crown at 9 p.m., starring beauty pageant expert Cy Frakes. The 12-episode series follows Frakes and his team at the Columbia, S.C.-based Gowns and Crowns as they work their pageant magic on various young women. One of their clients is Caitlin Upton, the 2007 Miss Teen USA contestant whose geography answer became a YouTube sensation, who shows up in tonight’s premiere. The fabulous and funny Frakes stopped by EW’s offices for a chat about business, beauty, and butt glue..yes, butt glue.

EW: How did you become an expert in beauty pageants?

FRAKES: I’ve been in the pageant business for 23 years. I think it’s just been kind of a metamorphosis over time. I directed pageants and then I produced them and then I was an emcee. And for a long time I was a judge. Over the years, I saw the girls changed but the mistakes they were making didn’t. I decided I could help these girls be better and stronger contestants.

The second half of the article for some reason contained my street address, the author went into a bit too much detail...so I will leave that off the internet! Enjoy!

Colleen Cahill Studios Photo Shoot Includes Hiking and Climbing, Just What This Oregon Girl Loves!

One of the many wonderful things about living on the west coast?  The beauty of the area is a huge attraction to those with artistic talents.

One such person is Colleen Cahill, owner of Colleen Cahill Studios.  Colleen grew up in the Portland/Metro area so she knows some of the best natural attractions Oregon has to offer. She also understands how they can factor into her craft, photography.
On what literally turned out to be the last day of summer in Oregon (its been cool and rainy ever since), Colleen, her trusty assistant Debbie and I ventured to some gorgeous sites to take my official Beauties of America 50s photos. First stop, the parking lot of the studio for some fun shots with my car.

The delegation arrived in Portland, Oregon from China this week to visit with Oregon apparel giants Nike and others and discuss collaboration opportunities for Chinese and Portland fashion professionals.  The visit culminated in a fusion of two global fashion networks in an event of international proportions last night at the Portland FUSE event.

Along with the Chinese delegation, elected officials from Oregon and Portland's fashion elite had front row seats to a design event that featured Chinese and American collections. Attendees had a chance to bid on pieces from the collections donated by the designers, as well as win a trip to Bejing in a silent auction held after the show.

It was raining yet again in Atlanta, but it didn't rain on the Capital City pageant's parade! It was a great night to see a very special young lady get crowned, Miss Capital City's Outstanding Teen 2010, her name is Camille Sims! I remember our very first coaching session together when she was 12 years old and I knew then she had that special something that the world would soon know of! Into her teen years she grew as a young lady and worked SO diligently on her platform to become Miss Fulton County's OT 2007, then Miss Jr. Teen Georgia United States 2008 and won the national Miss Jr. Teen United States 2008 title in Las Vegas! And last night, Camille captured Miss Capital City's Outstanding Teen 2010 along with the fitness and talent awards! Camille fondly calls us her, "Ma Mere" (french for mother) and "Mon Pere" (french for father) and we are so happy for you! You not only captured the crown, but have captured our hearts forever.

Breast Cancer Awareness

October brings with it an aray of beautiful autumnal colors, cool mornings and warm afternoons. It also brings us to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While this blog is dedicated to the need for blood donors, we shall not forget the millions of women (and even some men) that have fought, are fighting or will fight for their lives with breast cancer.
As with any surgery/treatments, including those associated with breast cancer, the need for blood is always apparent. Donate for those women struggling to survive - your gift of life through a donation, could just be the answer they are searching for. Is it the cure? No, but it is an opportunity for that patient to see tomorrow - when there might be a cure.

I had loved this photo, but the window frame and shadow in the background and the shiney spot on my forehead, made it unusable. Thanks to the retouch team at PageantRetouching.com, I got a really great headshot!

Jade Monfils in the State Fair of Texas Parade

The State Fair of Texas is an annual fair held in Dallas, TX and has been around since 1886. Yes, 1886! It is a tradition here in Texas, and workers and students are given a day off to attend the fair. There are millions that attend each year where there are carnival rides, live music, and a huge array of our famous fried foods. In the past we have had fried coffee, fried PB&J sandwiches, and this year it looks like there is deep fried butter!! There is a parade to kick off the start of the fair which runs through downtown Dallas and I was honored to be a part of it this year! :)

It was a great pageant, and all the ladies did a FANTASTIC job!! It was a very close competition, and I'm really proud to have been able to be a part of it!

Brooke Kilgarriff, Miss Minnesota 2009, produces a new CD to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network

Winning the title of Miss Minnesota 2009 was just the beginning for 20-year old Brooke Kelly Kilgarriff. Once crowned, Brooke discovered she had a personal mission. Since entering her local pageant in the fall of 2008, Brooke became a weekly volunteer at Gillette Children’s Hospital in St. Paul and experienced first hand the struggles of children who were faced with severe medical challenges. “Each time I spent time at the hospital I was inspired by the determination of these children and their families through times of great hardship.”

The national platform of the Miss America Organization is the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN).

Hi Tim, Here's Mrs. Montana International 2009 and Ms. North America Galaxy 2009 teaming up for appearances at the Heart Walk in Missoula, MT on Oct. 3rd, 2009 :-) Because we met, we did another appearance tonight for the Special Olympics. Two sister queens that had never met became friends right away to serve our communities.
