Miss America returning to Muskegon

Newly-crowned Miss America Kirsten Haglund will return to Muskegon for a homecoming celebration Feb. 29 and March 1.
Her appearance is likely to bring national attention to the city.

The Muskegon-based Miss Michigan organization is planning the festivities, which will involve a Feb. 29 talent revue with Haglund and the other Miss America Live! finalists and the top 2007 Miss Michigan contenders at 7 p.m. at Frauenthal Theater.

The Top 10 Miss America finishers and other Miss America organization dignitaries, including Sam Haskell, chairman of the board, have been invited for the weekend, said Shelley Taylor, executive director of the Miss Michigan organization. She anticipates the Top 5 Miss America contestants will attend and participate in the revue.

In addition, Gov. Jennifer Granholm and the mayor of Farmington Hills, Haglund's hometown, have been sent invitations.

"This is still so surreal," Taylor said. "It's like planning a wedding in a month."
