PAGEANT PARTICULARS

State's had Miss America, but never Miss USA

Just in case you're confused -- Miss USA is not Miss America. They are separate pageants. Miss America began in 1921 in Atlantic City and has a reputation as a scholarship program. Miss USA, which began in 1952, is a beauty pageant that got its start as a swimsuit contest in California.

There has never been a Miss USA from Kentucky. Miss USA goes on to compete in the international Miss Universe contest. (Two Miss USAs have won Miss Universe.)

There has been one Miss America from Kentucky -- Heather French in 2000. Phyllis George, who now lives in Lexington, was Miss America in 1971, but she competed as Miss Texas.
