Britani Madala update

A Few Pictures from My Journey Spreading the Word that Blood Donation Matters

Here are three pictures that were taken throughout the last few months. Two are with blood donors and the other is with a very brave little girl named Brittany. Brittany, as explained in a previous post, is a young Racine girl with a very rare form of cancer. People such as Edward, Rachele, and Doug help to prolong or save the lives of those like Brittany. Brittany is amazing, has opened my eyes even more and most importantly has been a complete blessing in my life. She is currently undergoing stem cell replacement in the hope to completely wipe away the cancer. Not only is Brittany brave, she is strong. I ask you to be strong for those like Brittany who need your help to survive. For more information how you can help Brittany directly please email me at missracine2007@yahoo.com
Make an appointment to donate blood today, make a difference and know that you are a hero.

Please keep Brittany and her family in your thoughts and prayers!

Miss USA Visits High School Alma Mater

April 19, 2007 07:42 PM

Tennessee's own Miss USA returned home to the mid-state for a few days. She visited her alma mater Davidson Academy High School Thursday to speak to students.

"These kids can be Miss USA, doctors, lawyers or whatever they want. It's gonna take a lot of hard work. Things don't come naturally," Miss USA Rachel Smith said.

While Smith was only a month into her reign, she has already appeared on all the big network talk shows, including Letterman and Oprah. She's all moved into her 5th Avenue apartment in New York.

"Everything I have known has changed within a split second of them calling my name," Smith said.

She told the students at Davidson that the national spotlight has changed her schedule, but hasn't changed her or her faith.

"I'm going to let my faith shine through, my spirituality be the best and live up to those expectation, individuals and myself have for me," Smith said.

She took questions from the student audience, including a big one. One student popped the big questions to Smith, but she is already involved in a relationship.

She said she was a little tired for her appearance, but every autograph gets signed when she's out and about.

Some might say it's one of her duties as Miss USA, but those who remember her locally, said that's just Rachel.

Rachel and her parents will appear as special guests Friday on talk of the town at 11:00 a.m.

Miss Mexico's pageant dress raises eyebrows

Miss Mexico, Rosa Maria Ojeda, will have to tone down her Miss Universe pageant dress (shown here), which is accented with crosses, scapulars and a sketch of a man facing a firing squad.
Milenio Diario de Tampico
Miss Mexico, Rosa Maria Ojeda, will have to tone down her Miss Universe pageant dress (shown here), which is accented with crosses, scapulars and a sketch of a man facing a firing squad.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Miss Mexico is toning down her Miss Universe pageant dress — not because it's too slinky or low-cut, but because its bullet-studded belt and images of hangings from a 1920s uprising have outraged Mexicans.

The floor-length dress is accented with crosses, scapulars and a sketch of a man facing a firing squad. Designers who helped select the dress from among 30 entries argued it represented the nation's culture and history, especially since Mexico City is hosting the pageant in May.

Cut from a traditional natural cotton called manta, the dress depicts scenes from the 1926-1929 Cristero war, an uprising by Roman Catholic rebels against Mexico's secular government, which was imposing fiercely anti-clerical laws. Tens of thousands of people died.

"We wanted a dress that made you think of Mexico," Hector Terrones, who served on the selection committee, told La Jornada newspaper. "The design should grab people's attention and have impact without giving too much information."

But many Mexicans weren't happy about the history the dress evoked, especially at a moment of debate about the Catholic Church's role in politics and its lobbying against a Mexico City proposal to legalize abortion. Others said it glorified violence in a country where a battle between drug gangs has brought a wave of killings and beheadings.

I just wanted to share with you all of the things I've been up to lately! Attached please find the article that ran in the Middletown Press, the same article also ran in the Hartford Current and the Record Journal.
I've also been promoting my platform, Eating Disorder Awareness. Here is a link I did for CBS. You can click the play button on the right to see the airing. I recently found out that the story did air on CBS stations across the country! I also did a film for a new, exciting website called realhealth.tv which broadcasts internationally: http://www.realhealth.tv/?goto=17&vid=76&vo=4 It's becoming quite popular and the Connecticut Post did a story on it where they quoted me and explained more about the site, here's the link: http://www.connpost.com/women/ci_5545913 Also don't forget to watch me on ABC this July when my eating disorder special airs nationally on a special primetime report!
I also wanted to let you know what a wonderful opportunity it was to co-host the Bauer Hour with Mr. Bauer on Comcast Television. I can't wait to get the tape so I can watch it again! It was an honor to represent and let others know about the American Dream Pageant system. I also love when people say "didn't I see you on TV?" I will also be in the Daffodil Festival Parade on April 28th and crowning 'Little Miss Daffodil' a fundraiser pageant for charities in my town. Both will air on Cable Comcast Network Channel 3.
God Bless,

Miss America 2007 Lauren Nelson Helps AN “extreme makeover: Home Edition,” Family SURVIVE A DOUBLE TRAGEDY WITH A new home that will allow them more freedom to enjoy their lives

TUNE IN ALERT: Sunday, APRIL 22 at 8:00pm EST

Ty and the gang of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” along with some finishing touches from Miss America 2007 Lauren Nelson will create a home that is accessible for the entire Westbrook family of Lawton, OK, who have suffered much hardship and two separate accidents that left both father and son paralyzed. This edition of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will air SUNDAY, APRIL 22, 2007 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

Gene Westbrook, the father of three and husband to Peggy, volunteered to fight in Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he was left paralyzed and received a purple heart. After being discharged from the military, he devoted his time to speaking about his experiences and helping others. A loved and respected member of the close knit town, Gene had to jump through many hoops just to be able to afford a handicap accessible van that allowed him to drive.

On June 10, 2006, one year after Gene was paralyzed in Iraq, another tragedy hit the Westbrook family that would further impact their lives forever. While on their way to a friend’s house, the wheel of their van which they believed became loose, causing Gene to drive into oncoming traffic and the vehicle to roll over into a ravine. The family doesn’t remember much of the accident and suffered many serious injuries: son James was paralyzed from the waist down, daughter Katie required surgery to remove one of her kidneys and Gene broke his ankle and knee, and now suffers from short-term memory loss. With over a million dollars in medical bills, the Westbrook family can’t afford to make their house accessible for one person in a wheelchair, let alone two. This double tragedy has been toughest on Peggy, who has shown great courage in keeping the family together during this difficult time.

Lauren was proud to help with this Extreme Makeover and was thrilled to be a part of this unique endeavor to help this wonderful family in her home state, Oklahoma.

The Miss America Organization is one of the nation’s leading achievement programs and the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. Miss Hooters Canada beauty pageant proud to be tacky

21 women will compete for the title in Windsor

By Sonja Puzic, Windsor Star

Published: Monday, April 09, 2007

“Delightfully tacky, yet unrefined.”

It’s an odd requirement for a beauty pageant contestant, but it’s exactly what judges will be looking for at this year’s Miss Hooters Canada contest, expected to attract hundreds to downtown Windsor for a glimpse of the skimpily dressed waitresses better known for the flesh-revealing work attire than their tray balancing skills.

Twenty one women will compete for the national Miss Hooters title on May 17 at the Boom Boom Room and walk the orange carpet designed to match their infamous uniform shorts.

Pageant adapting to change

By Carol Bronson of the Tribune Staff
Published: Wednesday, April 11, 2007 1:16 PM CDT
E-mail this story | Print this page

When Miss Kansas 2007 is crowned in just over two months, she may not know when or where she will be competing at the next level, after Country Music Television announced last month that they will not televise the 2008 Miss America Pageant, thus leaving the time and location in limbo for now.

The situation is similar to that in 2005 when ABC discontinued its long-standing contract and as a result, the national pageant moved from its Atlantic City, N.J., home to Las Vegas and changed from a September to a January date.

Having adapted to change once they're better able to do it again, said Lisa Perez Miller, executive director of the Miss Kansas Organization, and uncertainty at the national level will have little impact on the states.

"We will proceed with preparations as we always do," Miller said.

Twenty-one contestants will arrive in Pratt on Tuesday, June 5 to begin rehearsals for preliminary competitions on Wednesday and Thursday nights, a Friday Night Live entertainment featuring both contestants and former titleholders, and the final competition on Saturday night. Absent this year will be the Miss Teen Kansas Pageant that was held in Wichita during February.

"We knew going in (to the contract with CMT) that they would exercise their option after two years or not," Miller said. "Like anything, it's a business and a lot of things are included in the assessment, not only ratings."

Pageant fight isn't looking pretty

A court will have to decide who can crown the next Miss Jacksonville.
Its titleholders may have stunning dresses and perfect poise, but the people behind Jacksonville's annual beauty pageant aren't smiling and waving.

A fight over the Miss Jacksonville franchise has pageant pundits locked in a battle over who has the right to crown the young women who yearn to hear "There she is, Miss America."

A month from now, the dispute will take an ugly turn - into the Duval County Courthouse for the first hearing on whether a judge should decide who the Miss Jacksonville pageant belongs to.

The North Florida Scholarship Organization, the former organizer of Miss Jacksonville, is suing the Miss Florida pageant for breach of contract and discrimination. The lawsuit also names the group awarded the Miss Jacksonville franchise, the Jacksonville Scholarship Foundation, and Jennifer Herrington, a woman who used to help direct Miss Jacksonville, as well as two companies that run Internet forums.

Kevin Sanders, a Jacksonville attorney and director of the North Florida Scholarship Organization, said Miss Florida took the contract away from him after a dust-up this fall. Sanders and his wife, Cammie, ran the Miss Jacksonville/Miss First Coast pageant - it sends both winners to compete for Miss Florida - for the past five years. Cammie Sanders is a long-time contestant whose titles include Ms. US Continental 2002. Kevin Sanders has participated in pageants in some way for more than 20 years. The two used to coordinate Miss Jacksonville with Ruth Sidbury, whose foundation has the franchise once again.

According to his complaint, the Miss Florida directors once tried to remove Sidbury after a board member alleged she used a racial slur to describe a black contestant.

Sidbury, co-executive director of the Jacksonville Scholarship Foundation, declined to comment. Mary Sullivan, who is the president and executive director of Miss Florida, also declined to comment. Both cited the advice of their attorneys.

Jennifer Herrington could not be reached, but is represented by the same attorney as Sidbury.

In a motion to dismiss the case, lawyers for the Miss Florida pageant said Sanders can't prove his allegations and that Sullivan never signed the contract for the 2007 Miss Jacksonville pageant.

Before the legal action and as the quarrel progressed, Sanders said, comments on several Miss Florida fan sites libeled him and his wife, and moderators refused to take down the messages. Forum pages were no longer active as of late Friday.

Internet message boards and forums have been damaging to the industry nationwide, said Penny Geiszler, publisher and owner of Turn For The Judges, an industry publication.

"They have totally trashed girls and been so rude and so mean before pageants," Geiszler said. Pageant directors have been attacked, she said, and it can be difficult to get postings taken down.

Geiszler said franchises in the Miss America local pageants come and go, but she said the lawsuit here is unlike anything she's heard of before.

Northeast Florida is home to an active pageant community and has been home to state and national-level competitors. In 2005, when Miss Florida Candace Cragg gave up her crown, the succeeding runner-up, Mari Wilensky, was also a Jacksonville-area native.

Sydney Keister, the reigning Miss Florida Oustanding Teen, is a Miss Jacksonville Teen. Leanza Cornett, who was crowned Miss America in 1993, hailed from Jacksonville.

Kevin Sanders said he and his wife would just like to continue helping the young women grow in their confidence. He points out that he and his wife were named the Miss Florida pageant's executive directors of the year in 2005, were recognized by Mayor John Peyton and City Council members, and have consistently donated their time and money to local and state organizations.

"All that doesn't add up," he said. "If I had done something wrong, I certainly wouldn't have filed something in court, which is public."
