FAIRMONT Before the Miss West Virginia International pageant, the only beauty contest that Elise Pitrolo ever participated in was for the West Virginia Three Rivers Festival.

Now the Mannington native lives in Charleston, and after a chance meeting last summer with a pageant judge, the 15-year-old was asked to enter.

After a few interviews, Pitrolo was chosen as the state’s representative to Miss Teen International, an offshoot of the Miss International contest that was created in 1960 in Long Beach, Calif., after the Miss Universe left that area and moved to Florida.

On Monday, Pitrolo, the daughter of Jim Pitrolo, Gov. Joe Manchin’s legislative director, and Patty Pitrolo, will travel to Chicago to participate in Miss Teen International 2007.

The pageant will be held Thursday and Saturday at the Northshore Center for the Performing Arts in conjunction with the Miss International 2007 pageant.

“I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for her to get to meet a lot of young women from around the world,” said Patty Pitrolo. “Being international, it’s not only for states — there are contestants from around the world. I think it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance for a young woman.”
