clipped from missnorthcarolinainternational09.blogspot.com Make A Wish Reception honoring Dr. Jerry Clark, the founder of the NC Chapter, was at Flemings Restaurant in Greensboro, NC!  It was a great night, with all my favorite MAW volunteers and several of the wonderful Wish Kids I have come to know and love over the past year! It was a great night, we shared wonderful stories and tributes and most importantly we thanked Dr. Clark, because of him- NC has granted over 2500 wishes for children with life threatening illnesses!  Tuesday we were so excited to be invited to the Ruth’s Chris reception, where we met with the NFL Coordinator about some great volunteer opportunities for the near future, he was there with some great people!  Thanks to Ruth’s Chris in Greensboro for a great night, and a thank you to George for always, being so hospitable!

Barrington Junior Women's Club Fashion Show

clipped from mrsillinoisamerica2009.blogspot.com I was invited by Tracey and Zzazz Productions to once again join them for another Fashion Show Fundraiser, this time in Hoffman Estates for the Barrington Junior Women's Club at the Stonegate Conference and Banquet Centre, Saturday. This was another great opportunity to be a part of a stellar show filled with beautiful designs and lovely ladies showing them off. I consider it an honor to get to walk with them. Thanks again to Jason Pawlowski for giving his afternoon to document the event, and to Marcie and Julie Aceto for taking time out of their schedule to attend.

NC USA Pageant, High Point

clipped from missnorthcarolinainternational09.blogspot.com November 13-14, 2009 I headed from Cary, to High Point to meet my wonderful Director and my sister queens and great sponsors to go watch our friends compete for the title of Miss & Teen North Carolina USA!  Congrats to the new winners of the crown- all of you ladies did an amazing job!  Paula always puts on a wonderful show-this years theme was Egyptian!  WOW! We had a really fun night!

I never wanted to compete against other women when it came to beauty, because I felt like some women could really be affected by not winning the title. I learned about MCA from my hair stylist on a Saturday as I was looking through the free literature that she had displayed on the table. I wrote down the web site and looked it up when I got home. Angie: Why did you decide to compete? Shanta: After competing last year, and becoming first runner up, I was really excited to know that I was so close to winning. I decided after meeting so many great people, and hearing their inspirational stories, I wanted to share my stories and inspire the women who were a part of the pageant for this year as well.

Reading Day at Linley Elementary

clipped from missnorthcarolinainternational09.blogspot.com November 5th, I was asked as a leader in the Greensboro Community to be a reader at a local elementary school as they taught the children the importance of reading and education!  I read to a third grade class, where I saw many familiar faces, and I read to them the book: DUCK FOR PRESIDENT!  I told them I chose that book, because of the wonderful election last year with record voters and the historical importance as well as the fact I was a White House Intern in 2008!  Thank you Ms. Jarrell for letting me be a part of your class for the day!  UNCG photographers came out to capture some great moments for a story for their website (coming soon!) on the importance of service learning and volunteering in the community!  Those pictures will be coming soon!

Jingle Mingle Parade in Burr Ridge

clipped from mrsillinoisamerica2009.blogspot.com Saturday evening was spent in Burr Ridge for the 2nd Annual Jingle Mingle, an event filled with train rides, live reindeer, face painting, meeting the Mayor and Santa, and parade leading up to the tree lighting in downtown. We were so fortunate to have some wonderful 60+ degree weather! There were over 1,000 people in attendance this year! I had the opportunity to help with the tree lighting ceremony after the parade, and then visit with those in attendance taking photos and signing autograph cards. http://www.shopburrridge.com/

An interesting twist to confidence is that we put trust in the confident referral of someone we trust. Hmm. I think there's something in this for the upcoming book, Courageous Beauty! Angie: What titles do you hold? Rebecca: I do not currently hold a title, but am the former National Mrs. Virginia (2006) and Virginia 30's Beauty Of America (2008/9) Angie: What is your platform? Rebecca: "It's Hip 2 Give" is my personal platform - Blood donation is vital to my life and the life of millions of others and by donating just one hour of time and one pint of blood, a donor saves 2 lives. Angie: Why did you decide to compete? Rebecca: Beyond my friend asking me to compete, I genuinely thought as a teen that it was a fun experience. As I grew older, I not only felt it was fun, but an opportunity to grow as an individual and to promote a personal cause.

Election Day in Greensboro, NC

clipped from missnorthcarolinainternational09.blogspot.com On November 3rd was Election Day in Greensboro, NC!  It was a big day for us, and I love Election Day, every year!  We spent the evening watching the election night results in the Greensboro-Guilford Courthouse!  Congrats to Bill Knight, our new mayor and my friend Robbie Perkins, council member at large!  I saw my beautiful friends the Perkins sisters there and we took some great pictures as we congratulated all the new winners and winning incumbents!  We there in support of the Natural Science Center-Vote Yes campaign!  Which passed, and we were so thrilled to celebrate that on Wednesday at the Natural Science Center in Greensboro!  A one a kind facility that has a full zoo, and on the way- a state of the art aquarium!

Angie: What is your platform?   Sonja: My platform is Women in Technology.  I am the voice for women excelling in Technology within Corporate America and outside of Corporate America. Angie: Why did you decide to compete?  Sonja: I decided to compete because it has always been a dream of mine to win a national pageant and also to promote my platform, Women in Technology.  I also thought it would be great to meet women all over the United States. Angie: Was this your first pageant? Sonja: No I have competed in 9 other pageants prior to this one.
